Common questions.
Is rewiring really $9-$18 per square foot?
For typical Marin partial-to-major-partial rewire scope, yes. Goes higher for full rewires in pre-1955 homes ($15-$25 per sq ft typical), goes lower for simpler scopes like aluminum retrofit only ($3-$6 per sq ft equivalent). Per-square-foot pricing is a rough benchmark for comparing quotes — the actual cost depends on specific scope, which we determine during the quote visit.
Why is my quote much higher than the online 'national average'?
Online national averages (often citing $4,000-$14,000 for 'whole home rewire') don't reflect California labor costs, Marin AHJ requirements, vintage housing stock, or the actual scope of modern code-compliant work. National averages typically assume 1,200 sq ft 1990s home with simple wall access. Marin reality is older, larger homes with harder access and stricter inspections — 2-3× the national average is normal for legitimate work here.
Can I get a fixed-price quote or only an estimate?
We provide fixed-price quotes for the defined scope. Where homes have unknown conditions inside walls (common with vintage stock), we may include contingency allowances for specific scenarios — disclosed up front so you know what could change pricing. Surprises during work are rare when the quote visit was thorough; most fixed-price quotes hold all the way to completion.
Do you finance rewiring or accept payment plans?
We offer payment scheduled by milestone (deposit + at completion + at inspection close-out for typical scope; deposit + 3 progress payments + completion for larger scope). We don't carry direct financing, but we can recommend third-party home-improvement financing partners that have worked well for our customers. We also accept the major credit cards for those who prefer to use card rewards on the larger purchase.
Will the rewire cost more if I have plaster walls?
Yes, modestly. Plaster requires more careful opening and patching than drywall — patches need to match texture and color of surrounding plaster, which is finish-work that adds time and may require a specialty plasterer. We add typically $1,500-$4,000 to total for plaster wall context. For homes with historic plaster requiring preservation-quality work, the addition is larger. We discuss this during the quote.
How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. California State License Board C-10 Electrical Contractor #989290, in good standing. Carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance as required by California law. Bondable on projects requiring it. Happy to provide proof of insurance to clients or property managers on request. License lookup: cslb.ca.gov.
