01What electrical infrastructure automation actually needs.

A whole-home automation system has three electrical infrastructure requirements that homeowners (and many integrators) underestimate. First: a network hub location with dedicated circuit, ventilation, and structured cabling backhaul — the brain of the system needs power, doesn't run well in a hot closet, and needs wired Ethernet to every major control point. Second: neutral wires at every switch location, because modern smart switches require neutral connections that most older homes don't have. Third: clean power isolation for sensitive equipment via dedicated circuits and surge protection.

Skipping any of these works on day one but creates progressive issues over years. The smart system in a hot unventilated closet thermal-throttles. 02Three planning decisions that matter most.

Hub location and infrastructure

Pick a network closet location with: dedicated 20A circuit, ventilation (not a closed wall closet), Ethernet from this point to every major room and the main panel, room to expand. Mechanical closets and dedicated network rooms work; broom closets and laundry rooms don't.

Smart switch neutral availability

Modern smart switches (Lutron Caseta, Leviton Decora Smart, Lutron RA3) require neutral connections at the switch box. Many older homes (built before 1990) don't have neutrals at switch boxes. Adding them during a remodel costs 30-50% less than adding them retroactively to a finished house.

Protocol architecture

Choose protocol family before buying devices. Major options: Lutron (best switches and dimming, expensive), Z-Wave (best device variety, slightly slower), Zigbee (good variety, integrates well with Hue), Matter (industry-converging standard, growing device support). 03Working with automation integrators.

Most whole-home automation projects involve a home automation integrator (HTA, CEDIA, or local equivalent) who designs the system, programs the controls, and provides ongoing support.
