01Why panels and water don't mix.

02Replacement vs repair decision.

Repair is almost never the answer

After significant water exposure, even if the panel 'looks fine' once dried, corrosion has begun on bus bars and terminations. This corrosion creates high-resistance connections that overheat under load — fire risk months or years after the water event. Breakers that got wet are unreliable even if they appear functional. Insurance and code authorities both recognize this; replacement is the standard remedy.

Minor exterior moisture is sometimes recoverable

If only the outside of the panel got wet (dew, condensation, light spray that didn't enter the enclosure), and no water reached the interior, drying and inspection may suffice. Diagnostic: open the panel (de-energized), visual inspection of bus bars, terminations, breaker interiors, signs of moisture intrusion. Most cases reveal interior water exposure that wasn't apparent externally.

Full replacement scope

Replace panel, all breakers, and any damaged or corroded service entrance components. Reuse of customer wiring downstream is usually fine if the wiring wasn't submerged — inspection of branch circuit conductors at the panel for water-line marks or corrosion. Insurance typically covers full replacement scope.

03Insurance and documentation.

Document the event thoroughly: photos of the water source (flooded basement, roof leak, etc.), photos of the panel showing water contact (water lines on enclosure, water inside if visible), date and time of event, source of water if known. File insurance claim immediately — water-damage scope often involves multiple systems (electrical, drywall, flooring, contents) and your insurer wants the comprehensive picture. Your adjuster will coordinate with the electrician on the electrical scope.
