Is it normal for dimmers to be warm?
Yes — dimmers dissipate heat as part of how they control output voltage. Slightly warm to the touch (you can comfortably keep your hand on it) is normal under load. Hot enough that you want to remove your hand quickly is not normal — that indicates overload (controlling more wattage than the dimmer is rated for) or failing dimmer. Check dimmer rating label inside the switch box vs total wattage of bulbs controlled.
Can a warm switch start a fire?
Indirectly, yes — the warmth itself isn't ignition temperature, but the underlying cause (loose connections, arcing) can progress to arc-fault conditions that ignite wall cavity materials. The switch is the visible warning; the failure mode that causes the warning is what creates fire risk. Not 'switches catch fire' but 'conditions that cause warm switches can escalate.' Address them when noticed.
Should I just replace the switch myself?
For toggle switches with simple line-load wiring, possible but not recommended. The issue causing the heat may be at the wire-to-switch connection inside the box — improper re-termination can reproduce or worsen the problem. Electricians use proper torque on terminals and verify connections; the cost difference between DIY ($5 switch, 30 minutes of your time, some risk) and pro ($180-$320 service call with warranty and code compliance) is small.
What if multiple switches are warm?
Multiple warm switches simultaneously is unusual and suggests broader issues: panel-level voltage problems, overall house overload during peak hours, or shared neutral issues. Schedule diagnostic visit; this isn't a switch-by-switch problem but a circuit or panel-level investigation. The diagnostic process changes when symptoms are house-wide vs single-fixture.
How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. California State License Board C-10 Electrical Contractor #989290, in good standing. Carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance as required by California law.
