01How interlock kits work.
A panel interlock kit is a mechanical bracket installed at the main panel that physically prevents the main breaker and a dedicated generator-input breaker from both being on simultaneously. When grid is up: main breaker on, generator breaker off, generator inlet de-energized. When grid fails: turn off main breaker, manually flip generator breaker on (which the interlock now allows because main is off), start generator and plug into inlet, generator power back-feeds through the generator breaker to the panel bus, which powers all panel circuits. Critical step: homeowner must turn off non-essential breakers to keep total generator load within capacity.

Transfer switch is simpler under stress (typically 3 steps); interlock requires breaker management (typically 8-15 steps depending on home complexity).
Circuit flexibility
Transfer switch: locked to pre-selected circuits (6-10 typically). Adding circuits later requires electrician work. Interlock: any panel circuit can be powered by selecting which breakers are on. Useful for homes where essential loads vary by season or situation.
Code and inspection
