Common questions.
Can I use the Tesla Wall Connector with non-Tesla EVs?
Yes, with the included NACS-to-J1772 adapter or with a NACS-native EV. Tesla's Wall Connector ships with a J1772 adapter that handles most Ford, GM, Hyundai, Kia, Volkswagen, Audi, and other non-Tesla EVs. Newer EVs from Ford, GM, Rivian, and others are shipping with native NACS ports starting 2025-2026. Works either way for typical home charging.
How long does Tesla Wall Connector installation take?
For typical single-unit install: 3-5 hours on install day plus 1-2 hours scheduling/permit time. Multi-unit installs with load sharing run 5-8 hours depending on configuration. Tesla's online installer scheduling is convenient for getting quotes; in-Marin we typically respond faster than the Tesla-coordinated installer network and provide more thorough load calculations. Most Marin Tesla owners find local installer responsiveness better than the centralized scheduling.
Do I need 48A or is 40A enough?
For Model 3 / Model Y, 48A adds 44 mph of range vs 40A's 36 mph — meaningful but not transformative. For Model S Long Range or Model X with larger packs, the difference is smaller in percentage terms. We typically recommend 48A when the panel passes the load calc — the conductor cost difference between 40A and 48A is minor and the future-proofing matters. For tight load-calc situations, 40A install is fine and slightly cheaper to wire.
Can I install the Wall Connector myself?
Tesla's documentation describes the install process, but California requires licensed electrical work for permanent EV charger installation. Self-install creates code-compliance issues, potential insurance problems, and (importantly) Tesla won't honor warranty claims on units installed without a licensed electrician's documented work. For permanent install: hire a licensed C-10 electrician. For temporary plug-in setups (NEMA 14-50 outlet + Tesla Mobile Connector), self-install of the EVSE is fine if the outlet was installed by a licensed electrician.
How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. California State License Board C-10 Electrical Contractor #989290, in good standing. Carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance as required by California law. Bondable on projects requiring it. Happy to provide proof of insurance to clients or property managers on request. License lookup: cslb.ca.gov.
