J1772 is the universal North American Level 2 EV charging connector — adopted in 2010, used by every non-Tesla EV through 2024. Larger, heavier connector than Tesla's. Reliable, well-supported, abundant aftermarket. Most Wallbox, ChargePoint, Emporia, Grizzl-E chargers ship with J1772 connectors.

NACS (North American Charging Standard) is Tesla's proprietary connector, retroactively published as an open standard in late 2022. Smaller, lighter than J1772. Adopted by Ford starting 2024, GM, Rivian, Hyundai/Kia (announced), Volvo (announced), and most other major automakers planned 2025-2026. 02What to install based on your vehicles.

Tesla-only household: NACS (Tesla Wall Connector)

If you drive Teslas and don't plan to switch brands, Tesla Wall Connector with native NACS connector is the cleanest option. Comes with J1772 adapter for any future non-Tesla EV you might add.

Non-Tesla EV household: J1772 (any major brand)

Wallbox, ChargePoint, Emporia, Grizzl-E with J1772 native connector. Works with all current and most future EVs via adapters as the NACS transition progresses. Future-proof option.

Mixed Tesla + non-Tesla household: J1772 with adapter

J1772 charger + Tesla's J1772-to-NACS adapter (Tesla sells for ~$50). Works with both vehicles. Slight inconvenience of plugging in the adapter for Tesla charging vs native NACS.

Future-proofing for unknown next vehicle: J1772

If you might switch EV brands in the next 3-5 years, J1772 hardware with adapters gives more flexibility than NACS-only. Adapters work in both directions but adding a NACS-to-J1772 adapter to a Tesla Wall Connector feels less native than the reverse.

03What the industry transition looks like.

Most major automakers have announced NACS adoption for new vehicles launching 2025-2026. Ford F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, and other recent Ford EVs ship with NACS ports starting 2025. GM Equinox, Blazer EVs ship with NACS starting 2025. Rivian, Hyundai, Kia, Volvo, Polestar, Honda all have NACS roadmaps. Volkswagen and BMW have delayed but announced. Result: by 2027-2028, the majority of new EVs in North America will have native NACS ports.

What this means for home charging hardware: J1772 hardware will remain compatible (via adapter) for decades — there's too much installed base and aftermarket ecosystem to abandon. NACS hardware becomes the more native choice for newer EVs starting now. For a 2026 install you'll keep for 8-12 years, either works fine; the adapter convenience may matter more by 2030 than it does today.

Common questions.

Will I need to replace my charger when my next EV has a NACS port?

No — adapters handle the connector difference. Tesla sells a J1772-to-NACS adapter ($50) that works with non-Tesla EVs that adopt the NACS port. Aftermarket adapters work in both directions. Your J1772 home charger will keep working with any EV regardless of which connector standard the vehicle uses, as long as adapters are available — and they will be.

Is the NACS connector actually better than J1772?

Slightly, in some ways. NACS is smaller, lighter, and has fewer pins (combines AC and DC charging in one connector vs J1772 which uses CCS for DC fast charging). Tesla's connector design is considered cleaner engineering. Whether this matters at home: barely. You handle the connector for 30 seconds when plugging in; both work fine. The standardization momentum matters more than the engineering differences.

What about CCS (the DC fast charging connector)?

CCS (Combined Charging System) is the DC fast charging standard — used at public Electrify America, EVgo, and most non-Tesla fast chargers. CCS uses J1772's AC pins plus two additional DC pins. CCS is being phased out in favor of NACS for fast charging on most networks (Electrify America transitioning by 2026, EVgo similar). Doesn't affect home charging — home chargers are AC only (Level 2 = 240V AC), so the DC connector difference is irrelevant for home install decisions.

Will Tesla switch all its existing vehicles to J1772?

No — existing Teslas keep their NACS ports. New Teslas continue with NACS native. What's changing is that other automakers are adopting NACS for their new vehicles, not Tesla switching away from NACS. Tesla owners benefit from the standardization in that more public charging networks now support NACS natively. Home charging for Teslas is unchanged.

How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?

Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.

How quickly can you schedule?

Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.

What warranty do you offer on work?

Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost.
