01The Tesla Powerwall electrical components.
Tesla Powerwall installations include three electrical components: the Powerwall battery unit itself (13.5 kWh, mounts to wall or floor), the Gateway (transfer device handling grid interconnection and transfer logic), and the essential loads sub-panel (routes critical loads through Gateway for backup operation). The Gateway is the key piece — it monitors grid status, manages disconnection during outages within milliseconds, supplies essential loads from battery during outages, and reconnects when grid returns.
Mounting and location matter. Powerwall is typically wall-mounted in a garage, utility room, or exterior wall location. Temperature range (-20°F to 122°F operating; performance optimal at moderate temps) and weather exposure considerations dictate placement. Gateway mounts adjacent to or near the main panel. Essential loads sub-panel locates between Gateway and existing main panel. We coordinate locations with the homeowner and Tesla Certified Installer during planning.

Pre-install panel work
If panel upgrade is needed (older or constrained panel), it happens before Powerwall install — typically 2-3 weeks earlier. This separates the panel work from the Powerwall scope and lets Tesla Installer arrive at a ready panel.
Essential loads sub-panel install
Either pre-installed before Powerwall delivery, or installed during Powerwall install day. Circuits migrate from main panel to essential loads sub-panel during this work — typically 8-15 circuits depending on backup priorities.
Powerwall + Gateway commissioning
Tesla Certified Installer mounts Powerwall, installs Gateway, completes wiring per Tesla specifications. Includes Tesla app configuration, network connectivity, initial commissioning. Tesla provides commissioning support; installer handles physical work.
03Common Marin Powerwall scenarios.
Scenario A — adding Powerwall to existing solar: panel-side electrical is straightforward if panel has capacity. Essential loads sub-panel adds ($1,500-$3,000), circuit migration ($1,500-$3,000), Gateway and Powerwall mounting and wiring ($800-$1,500 incremental over hardware). Total electrical: $4,000-$7,500 typical. Tesla Installer or partnering electrician handles bulk of work; we sometimes get called for panel upgrade if existing panel needs it.
Scenario B — new solar + Powerwall simultaneous: more complex coordination. Solar electrical (interconnection, AC disconnect), Powerwall electrical (Gateway, essential loads), and panel-side work (upgrade if needed). Total electrical scope often $8,000-$15,000 depending on solar size and battery count. Scenario C — multiple Powerwalls (typically 2-3 stacked): higher backup capacity, longer essential loads runtime, more electrical scope around larger Gateway configurations.
Common questions.
Do I need a Tesla Certified Installer for Powerwall?
Tesla strongly prefers (and in many cases requires) Tesla Certified Installers for Powerwall installations to maintain warranty coverage. The certification covers Tesla-specific commissioning, software setup, and warranty registration. Most Marin Powerwall installs go through Tesla Certified Installers; we coordinate with them for panel-side electrical work as needed. Tesla maintains a certified installer directory at tesla.com.
How long does Powerwall installation take?
Install day itself is typically 8-12 hours for single Powerwall + Gateway + essential loads sub-panel. Multiple Powerwalls extend to 1.5-2 days. Pre-install panel upgrade (if needed) is a separate 2-3 week project completed before Powerwall install. Total project from contract signing to commissioned Powerwall: 6-10 weeks including permits, panel work, install, and inspections.
Can Powerwall run my whole house during outages?
Depends on Powerwall count and home load. Single Powerwall (13.5 kWh) runs typical essential loads (refrigeration, lighting, electronics, gas furnace blower, select outlets) for 24-36 hours. Whole-home operation including HVAC, electric water heater, electric range typically requires 3-4+ Powerwalls. Most Marin installs use 1-2 Powerwalls with essential loads sub-panel rather than whole-home approach.
What if I have a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel?
Panel replacement is required before Powerwall installation. Tesla Installers won't connect Powerwall to known-problematic panels, and the underlying safety concerns predate the Powerwall decision regardless. Panel replacement is a 2-3 week project that should happen before Powerwall installation begins. We frequently handle these upgrades on Marin homes preparing for solar+battery.
How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.
