Structured cabling is the often-invisible infrastructure that determines whether a commercial property can support modern business operations — Cat6/Cat6a for office workstations and VoIP phones, fiber for high-bandwidth needs and inter-building runs, dedicated cabling for security and access control. The work itself is straightforward when done to spec, but spec adherence is the difference between cabling that works for 25 years and cabling that fails certification testing on day one.
We do structured cabling as part of commercial TI work where it makes scheduling sense — coordinated with rough-in electrical, terminated after drywall, tested before tenant move-in. For standalone cabling work (network upgrades in already-occupied spaces, new equipment installs), we work around business operations to minimize disruption.
Structured cabling is the standardized low-voltage cabling infrastructure for data, voice, video, and control signals in a commercial property — typically Cat6/Cat6a for network drops, fiber for backbones, terminated to patch panels in a central rack location per BICSI/TIA-568 standards.
Cat6 supports 1GbE indefinitely and 10GbE up to 55m runs. Cat6a supports 10GbE up to the full 100m run length per TIA-568. For most office installs, Cat6a is the current standard — cost premium is modest ($15-$25 per drop) and the future-proofing is real.
Proper structured cabling installs end with certification testing using Fluke or similar test equipment. Each drop is tested for length, attenuation, NEXT (near-end crosstalk), return loss, and other parameters per TIA-568. Test results document warranty eligibility — typically 25-year warranties on certified Cat6a installs.

Days 31–60
Cable pulled through pathways (cable tray, conduit, or open runs depending on building). Outlet boxes mounted. Service loops maintained at every termination point per spec.
Days 61–90
Cables terminated at outlets (RJ45 jacks) and at the patch panel using proper punch-down technique. Labels applied to both ends matching the documented numbering scheme.
Quality structured cabling manufacturers (Panduit, CommScope, Leviton, Hubbell) offer 25-year warranties on Cat6a cabling — but only when installed by certified installers and certified at completion per TIA-568. The certification testing produces a per-drop test report documenting compliance with the standard, and the test report is what the manufacturer requires to honor the warranty.
Cheap cabling installs skip the certification testing because the test equipment is expensive ($8,000-$15,000 for Fluke DSX-5000) and the testing time adds 1-2 hours per 50 drops. The savings disappear the first time a drop fails and the business has to fund the diagnostic and remediation without warranty coverage. We certification-test every commercial install and provide the test reports as standard project documentation.
Most Marin structured cabling work happens alongside electrical TI work. The coordination matters.
Cable trays, conduit runs, and wall-fishing pathways are often shared between electrical (line voltage) and cabling (low voltage). Code requires separation distances (typically 12 inches between line-voltage and Cat6 in parallel runs) but coordinated planning prevents the rework that comes from running them independently.
Cabling rough-in typically happens during the same window as electrical rough-in (during framing, before drywall). Termination happens after drywall but before final finish. Coordinating both trades in one schedule saves 1-2 weeks of buildout time.
