Each major atmospheric river event drives a predictable mix of damage calls across Marin. The patterns are consistent.
Most common storm scope. Falling branches, swaying trees, or wind-driven debris impact the service mast (the conduit running up the side of the house carrying service-entrance conductors). Mast bends, conduit pulls away from house, weatherhead becomes compromised. Requires mast replacement plus PG&E coordination.
Tree (or large branch) takes down the service drop between pole and house. PG&E equipment damaged; sometimes property equipment damaged too. PG&E handles drop replacement; we handle on-property scope (weatherhead, mast) if affected.
Heavy rain saturates foundation, water enters basement or crawl space, reaches electrical equipment. Panel flooding is automatic emergency — energized panel + water = shock hazard + equipment damage. Requires de-energization, drying, assessment, often replacement.
Roof damage allows water into wall cavities, reaching fixtures, outlets, or panels through the wall structure. Less visible than direct flooding but progressive — water in walls damages wiring connections over hours/days even after the rain stops.
Service mast damage looks simple but requires PG&E coordination because the service entrance is the legal handoff point between PG&E's equipment and yours. PG&E owns up to and including the service drop (the cable from pole to weatherhead); you own the mast, weatherhead, meter base, and panel. When the mast is damaged, the conductors PG&E owns are routed through equipment you own — and they need to disconnect before you can repair, then reconnect after.
The standard sequence: we assess the damage on-site, file a PG&E emergency ticket for temporary disconnect, PG&E dispatches to pull the meter or disconnect the service drop, we perform the mast/weatherhead/meter base repair, AHJ inspects if required, PG&E returns to re-meter and re-energize. Typical timeline 24-72 hours from initial call to power restored, depending on PG&E demand during the storm event. We manage the coordination — you don't need to call PG&E separately.
When water reaches an electrical panel, the response sequence has specific steps. Don't attempt this yourself; the hazards are real.
If the main breaker is accessible and water hasn't reached the main, turn off main breaker. If water has reached the main breaker or panel is fully submerged, don't approach — call PG&E for service-side disconnect. Water around energized electrical = shock hazard for anyone approaching.
After de-energization, the panel needs to dry completely before any inspection or repair. Air movement, dehumidification, sometimes accelerated drying with industrial equipment. Once dry, assessment determines salvageable vs replacement.
Flooded panels almost always need replacement. Water reaching breaker mechanisms, bus bars, or termination points causes corrosion that compromises long-term reliability — even if the panel appears to work after drying. The conservative repair is replacement; cost typically $4,800-$8,500 for residential panel replacement plus any service-side repair needed.
Storm damage to electrical equipment is typically covered by homeowner's insurance — but the claim filing process requires specific documentation. We provide what insurance carriers typically need: photos of damage in current state before repair, written cause assessment (tree impact, wind damage, water intrusion source), itemized repair scope with cost estimates, documentation of PG&E coordination if service-side scope is involved, and final repair documentation after work completes.
