Marin County · Surge Protection

Installing a whole-house surge protector, step by step.

From quote to inspection, here's exactly what happens when we install whole-house surge protection on your panel — start to finish.

TL;DR

Whole-house SPD installation takes 4-6 hours including permit pickup, panel inspection, device mounting, wire termination, testing, and inspector scheduling. Power is off for 1-2 hours during the actual install. Inspector schedules within 1-2 weeks after install. Total project timeline 2-3 weeks from contract signing.

01Day-of timeline.

We arrive with the SPD, mounting hardware, and permit. First step is a 15-minute panel inspection to confirm bus bar condition, grounding integrity, and available space for the SPD. We discuss any panel concerns we find before proceeding (in rare cases, panel condition warrants pause for further conversation rather than proceeding). After inspection, we shut off the main breaker, verify with a meter that bus bars are de-energized, and proceed with installation.

Installation itself takes 1-2 hours: mount SPD body, connect line conductors to bus bars or dedicated breaker (depending on SPD model and panel), connect equipment grounding conductor, connect neutral, verify all torque values to manufacturer spec. Restore power, verify SPD status indicators show normal operation, document install in the panel with a labeled cover note. Total power-off time is 1-2 hours; the rest of the visit is documentation, cleanup, and inspection scheduling.

02Three things we verify before leaving.

Grounding integrity

SPDs work by shunting surge energy to ground. If your panel grounding has issues (loose connections, missing ground rod, code violations), the SPD won't function correctly. We verify grounding meets current code as part of every install — and address any issues we find before completing the project.

Bus bar integrity

Some older panels have damaged or corroded bus bars from past arc events or thermal cycling. SPD installation includes inspection of the bus bar surface where the connection is made. Damaged bus bars get cleaned or replaced (depending on extent) before SPD install proceeds.

Status indicator function

Modern SPDs have status indicators (LEDs, audible alarms, or both) showing protection state. After install we verify indicators show normal/green, then explain to the homeowner what the indicators will look like over time and when to call about a status change.

03Why permit and inspection matter for surge work.

Marin jurisdictions require permits for SPD installation because the work involves opening live panels and modifying primary electrical infrastructure. Permit and inspection provide third-party verification that the install meets code, grounding is intact, and the panel is safe to operate. For insurance claims after a surge event, having permitted SPD installation documented is meaningful — unpermitted electrical modifications can be cited by insurers as grounds for partial or full claim denial.

Inspector visits typically schedule within 1-2 weeks after install. We're present for the inspection to address any questions. Inspection itself is brief (15-30 minutes) — inspector verifies installation meets code, panel labeling is correct, and grounding/bonding is intact. After inspection passes, the permit closes and project is complete.

Common questions.

Does the power stay on during install?

No — the main breaker must be off for safe SPD installation. Total power-off time is 1-2 hours. We coordinate timing with the homeowner so the outage is convenient (avoiding critical work-from-home blocks, AV system uses, or similar). For homes with critical equipment that can't be off (medical devices, server rooms), we discuss alternative timing or temporary power solutions during the quote.

What happens if the inspection doesn't pass?

Rare in our experience, but if an inspector identifies issues during the final inspection, we address them at no additional cost. Common findings (when they occur) involve labeling improvements or torque verification — quick fixes. We've never had an SPD install fail final inspection at a Marin jurisdiction.

Can the SPD be installed if the panel is full?

Often yes, depending on the SPD model. Some SPDs connect directly to bus bars without requiring a dedicated breaker (most modern Type 2 designs work this way). Other SPDs require a dedicated 2-pole or 3-pole breaker, which means a panel without spare breaker space won't accommodate them. We assess panel space during the quote and recommend the appropriate SPD model based on what fits.

How disruptive is the install to my home?

Minimal beyond the 1-2 hour power outage. No walls opened, no drilling, no demolition. The work happens at the existing panel location. Homeowners typically don't need to be present during install as long as someone has authorized access; we lock up and leave the home as we found it. Most installs complete the same day they start.

How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?

Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.

How quickly can you schedule?

Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.

What warranty do you offer on work?

Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.

Are you licensed and insured?
