Is a small blue spark when plugging in dangerous?
Generally no. The brief blue arc as a plug makes contact with the outlet is normal physics — devices with capacitors (most modern electronics) draw a brief inrush current that creates the visible arc. Common for vacuums, microwaves, hair dryers, space heaters. The spark is small (under a second), confined to the plug-outlet interface, and not accompanied by smoke, smell, or sound. This is fine and doesn't require service.
Should I use the outlet between sparks?
No, if you're seeing concerning sparks (orange/yellow, recurring, larger, with smoke or smell, or spontaneous). Each arcing event damages the wire insulation incrementally and creates increasing fire risk. Turn off the breaker and don't use the outlet until inspected. The cost of waiting is exponentially higher than the cost of service.
What does AFCI protection do?
AFCI (Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter) breakers detect the specific electrical signature of arcing faults — exactly the conditions that cause outlet sparks to escalate to fires — and shut off power before damage occurs. Modern code requires AFCI protection in most residential living areas (bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms). If your panel doesn't have AFCI breakers on these circuits, that's a meaningful upgrade to consider — they specifically prevent the failure mode that outlet sparks indicate. We retrofit AFCI breakers during most panel-related service work.
Can I just replace the outlet myself?
Not recommended when sparks are involved — replacing the outlet without addressing potential underlying causes (loose backstab in adjacent box, damaged wiring, AFCI requirement) can result in continued arcing and fire risk despite the new outlet. Electricians evaluate the broader circuit when sparks are reported, not just the visible outlet. Cost difference between DIY ($15 outlet) vs electrician ($180-$320 service call with proper diagnosis) is small relative to fire risk if the underlying cause isn't addressed.
How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.
