Will solar require a panel upgrade?

01The 120% rule calculation.

NEC 705.12(B)(3) limits the sum of main breaker rating plus solar back-fed breaker rating to 120% of the busbar rating. For 200A busbar: 200A * 120% = 240A max. With 200A main breaker, the maximum solar breaker is 240 - 200 = 40A. With 200A main + 40A solar (240A total), you're right at the limit — adequate for solar systems with up to ~40A AC output (about 7-9 kW depending on inverter efficiency and rapid shutdown configuration).
