01Why c-wire matters.

Run new c-wire from HVAC equipment location (basement, crawl space, attic) to thermostat. Easy when accessible (open basement or crawl); harder when finished walls block path. Cost: $180-$320 additional beyond standard install.

No c-wire, difficult access

Either use Ecobee PEK (~$25 hardware, integrated into install) or run new c-wire through finished walls (more invasive). PEK is often the right answer when c-wire run would require wall openings. Cost: same as easy-c-wire install with PEK; significantly more with wall opening.

03HVAC system compatibility.

Most modern residential HVAC systems (gas furnace + AC, heat pump, electric furnace + AC) are compatible with major smart thermostats.
