Smart-home electrical work has two distinct layers. First is the structured low-voltage backbone — Cat6 cabling, sometimes fiber, conduit runs. This is the durable infrastructure that supports every device generation for 20-30 years. Second is the smart electrical platforms — Lutron lighting control, Span smart panels, automated shading. These depend on the backbone underneath.
The most common bad outcome is buying smart devices before wiring the home. Homeowners end up with WiFi-dependent stacks that work for two years and become unsupported. The right sequence is wire first (during access), then choose devices that ride on the wired backbone.
Smart-home electrical infrastructure is the combination of structured low-voltage cabling (Cat6, fiber, smurf-tube) and smart power-management platforms (Lutron, Span, Schneider) enabling home automation, energy management, and integrated control.
Cat6 to every TV, office, and feature location, plus smurf-tube conduit for future cable replacement, creates 30-year infrastructure that outlasts every device. Cost during construction is modest ($1,800-$4,500); retrofit cost is dramatically higher.
Span Panel and Schneider Energy Center add per-circuit monitoring and app control. Make sense for all-electric estates with multiple EVs, solar+battery, active load management. For typical homes, conventional panels with discrete smart breakers deliver 80% of value at 30% of cost.

Choose platforms with 10+ year manufacturer support and parts availability. Lutron, Crestron, Control4, Savant clear this bar. Most consumer smart-home brands don't.
