When should smart home electrical design happen?
Before framing rough-in, ideally during the design phase of construction or major remodel. The infrastructure decisions (network closet location, conduit pathways, neutrals at switches, future-circuit panel space) cost almost nothing if planned but require demolition to retrofit. Design phase is the leverage; install phase is the execution. We participate in design meetings with architects, designers, and builders on new construction projects.
Can I do this design work myself?
Partly — you can lay out goals, preferences, and budget. The specific technical decisions (circuit count and capacity, panel space, conduit sizing, code compliance) need electrician input because they affect material costs, code permits, and future flexibility. Design collaboration between homeowner (goals) and electrician (technical) works best. Pure DIY design often misses specific code requirements or technical considerations that affect downstream work.
How much does smart home design add to construction cost?
Typically 5-15% premium over standard electrical scope. For a $20,000 typical Marin electrical scope, design-aware approach adds $1,500-$3,000. Breakdown: extra circuits ($800-$1,800), neutrals at all switch boxes ($400-$1,200), network closet infrastructure ($800-$2,000), empty conduit pathways ($300-$800), additional panel space ($400-$1,200). Each item is small individually; the aggregate delivers years of futureproofing.
Is it worth doing in a smaller home?
Less leverage than in larger homes but still worth considering. Smaller homes (under 2,000 sq ft) have less complexity and fewer future loads — the design-aware approach delivers less aggregate value. For homes 2,500+ sq ft with anticipated electrification (EV, heat pump, induction range), the design phase pays back significantly. Smallest homes can do well with simpler 'add neutrals everywhere' and 'plan for EV circuit' rules without full design consulting.
How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. California State License Board C-10 Electrical Contractor #989290, in good standing. Carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance as required by California law.
