01Five design principles that pay back over time.

Principle 1: organize circuits by use, not by location. Traditional electrical thinking is 'one circuit per room.' Smart home thinking is 'one circuit per use type' — all general-purpose outlets on shared circuits, all dedicated devices on dedicated circuits, all smart lighting on properly-sized lighting circuits. This makes both code compliance and automation easier.

Principle 2: plan for futures, not just current loads. EV charger circuit even if you don't have an EV yet. Heat pump circuit if you're still on gas heating. Extra panel slots and conduit pathways. 02Specific design decisions that matter.

Network closet location

Pick a central location with: dedicated 20A circuit, ventilation, room to expand. Avoid: laundry rooms (humidity), broom closets (no ventilation), attics (temperature extremes), garages (temperature variation). Plan during framing/rough-in for the right location.

Conduit pathways

Run empty conduits between major locations during framing — main panel to network closet, network closet to media room, network closet to home office. Empty conduits let you upgrade cabling without opening walls. Costs nothing extra during framing; impossible to retrofit cheaply later.

Neutral availability at every switch box

Even for switches that don't need them yet, run neutrals to every switch box during construction. Neutrals are required for most smart switch retrofits. Adding them during construction is essentially free; adding them later requires wall opening.
