Is a single tripping breaker a sign I need rewiring?
Usually not on its own. A breaker that trips occasionally during peak load (microwave + toaster + coffee maker) is the breaker doing its job, not a wiring failure. Becomes a rewiring signal when it trips on normal use, when multiple breakers trip together, when the same circuit trips repeatedly across different loads, or when the breaker itself feels warm. Single occasional trips usually mean redistributing loads across circuits, not full rewire.
Can I just replace the outlets to fix two-prong-to-three-prong issues?
Sometimes, sometimes not. NEC allows replacing two-prong outlets with three-prong GFCI-protected outlets in many situations — provides shock protection without grounding the circuit. Not the same as actual grounding (some sensitive electronics, surge protectors, and AFCI requirements still need true ground), but acceptable code-wise. For kitchens, bathrooms, exterior outlets, and laundry areas, full grounded-circuit retrofit is usually the better answer.
How urgent is aluminum wiring really?
More urgent than most homeowners think, less urgent than alarmist sources suggest. Aluminum branch-circuit wiring (typically 1965-1972 era homes) does fail at higher rates than copper — the failure mode is loose connections at outlet/switch terminations causing arcing. Aluminum service-entrance and feeder wiring (heavier gauge) is generally fine and doesn't need replacement. The remediation can be either full branch-circuit replacement ($8,500-$18,000 range for typical home) or AlumiConn or COPALUM connector retrofit at every termination ($2,800-$5,800 range). We assess condition during the quote visit.
How do I know if my wiring is cloth-insulated?
Open the panel cover (or have an electrician do it) and look at how the conductors come into the panel. Cloth insulation looks like fabric-wrapped wire — black, sometimes with paper or rubber underneath. Modern wiring has shiny plastic insulation, usually colored (black, white, red, blue). Cloth insulation in working condition isn't immediately dangerous, but it dries out over decades and becomes brittle — eventually cracks or falls off, exposing the copper. Cloth-insulated homes typically need rewiring within 10-15 years even if currently functional.
What's the most reliable way to assess wiring condition?
Have a licensed electrician do a wiring assessment — typically a 60-90 minute visit covering panel inspection, outlet/switch sampling across multiple rooms, attic and crawl space wiring inspection where accessible, and load testing if needed. Cost is $185-$320 for the assessment (we credit it toward any work that proceeds). Output is a written report identifying immediate hazards, medium-term concerns, and long-term recommendations. More accurate than visual inspection alone; less invasive than opening walls to inspect everywhere.
How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. California State License Board C-10 Electrical Contractor #989290, in good standing. Carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance as required by California law.
