01What scorching tells you happened.

Scorching on an outlet — visible brown/black discoloration of the plastic, melting of the plastic, or charring — indicates the outlet reached temperatures sufficient to damage its plastic body (typically 300-500°F+). The heat source: arcing or extreme resistance at the wire connections, or a plug-to-outlet arc. The duration: anywhere from minutes (rapid heat from severe arc fault) to weeks (slow heating from gradual resistance buildup).

Scorching extends inside the outlet box that you can't see from outside. Wire insulation inside the box may be damaged. The outlet box itself may be heat-damaged if metal, or charred if old plastic. Drywall behind the outlet box may show heat damage. The visible scorching is the surface indicator; full damage assessment requires opening the outlet.

02What needs to happen.

Don't use the outlet

Even if it appears to be working, don't plug anything into it. The damaged insulation and components are unreliable — could spark, arc, or generate more heat. The fault that caused the scorching may still be active.

Turn off the breaker

De-energizes the outlet and stops any continued heating. Document the breaker number for the electrician (helps them work efficiently).

Same-day electrician

Standard dispatch (not necessarily emergency after-hours unless smell or smoke is present). The damage has occurred; immediate fire risk is lower with breaker off. But same-day diagnostic and repair is appropriate — leaving it as 'something to schedule later' creates risk of forgetting and inadvertently using the outlet later.

03Repair scope.

Minimum scope: replace the outlet, inspect wires in the box, retorque connections, replace any damaged wire sections, restore the box. Cost $200-$450 typical for single-outlet repair. If damage extends to upstream wiring (visible discoloration on wires entering the box), additional wire replacement needed: $300-$800.

Larger scope if needed: damage to multiple outlets on same circuit (suggests upstream issue — neutral fault, undersized wire), damaged box requiring replacement, or damage extending into stud cavity requiring drywall opening. Should I call insurance?

For visible scorch damage requiring repair beyond a single outlet, often worth a claim — especially if repair scope reaches $1,000+ or if any property damage occurred (drywall, items in/near outlet). Document with photos before repair; get electrician report describing damage; file claim with photos and report. Typical homeowner policy covers electrical-fault damage with deductible (often $500-$2,500).

How did it get to this point without me noticing?

Scorching can develop slowly (loose connection gradually worsening over months) or suddenly (single severe event in minutes). Slow development sometimes shows precursor symptoms — brief warmth, slight smell after heavy use, breaker trips. Sudden events may have no warning. Either way, the scorching now is the warning that needs response — no point regretting earlier missed signals, just respond now.

Can I keep using other outlets on the same circuit?

After breaker is off: no power to any outlets on that circuit. Whether to leave breaker off pending repair: depends on what's on the circuit. If circuit serves critical loads (refrigerator on dedicated circuit), maybe okay to leave breaker on after specifically turning off the affected outlet (electrician can guide). Generally safer to leave the whole circuit off pending repair, accept the inconvenience for 24-72 hours until diagnosis.

Why didn't the breaker trip?

Breakers protect against overload current (drawing more amps than rated) and short circuits (direct current path). Heat from high-resistance connections doesn't necessarily exceed breaker current rating. Resistance heating can happen at currents below breaker trip threshold — that's why scorching can occur without breaker tripping. AFCI breakers detect arc fault patterns better than standard breakers but aren't perfect. The fact that scorching occurred without trip doesn't mean the breaker is faulty.

How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
