Can I just install the EV charger without a load calc?
Some electricians will, but it's not the right approach. NEC 220.83 requires a load calc for new dedicated circuits, and AHJ inspectors increasingly check this at final inspection. Beyond code compliance, skipping the load calc is how panels get unintentionally overloaded — the EV competes with the heat pump or oven, breakers trip, and the EV doesn't actually deliver the charging speed you paid for. We do a 20-minute load calc on every EV install quote.
How do I know if my panel passes the load calc?
We run the NEC 220.83 optional method calc using your panel's nameplate amperage, the square footage of conditioned space, the appliances installed (specifically: HVAC/heating, water heater, range, dryer), and any existing EVSE. The output is a calculated demand in amps. If that number plus the new EV circuit at 125% of nameplate (NEC 625.42) fits under panel rating with safety margin, no upgrade needed. The calc takes us about 20 minutes during the quote visit.
What's a load management device and how does it work?
A load management device monitors total panel current and throttles the EV charger when other heavy loads are running — temporarily reducing or pausing EV charging during peak demand. Brands include Wallbox Pulsar Plus with Power Meter, ChargePoint Home Flex with load management, DCC-10/12 from RVE, and integrated load management in some smart panels (Span, Lumin). Cost $400-$900 installed including the device. Lets you add EV charging to a panel that wouldn't otherwise pass the load calc.
If I upgrade my panel anyway, what amperage should I go to?
For most Marin homes adding EV charging: 200A is the standard answer. Handles one EV charger plus typical home loads with comfortable headroom for future heat pump or appliance additions. Go to 400A if you have firm plans for two EVs plus heat pump plus ADU or major shop equipment — that level of load really does need the additional capacity. For most single-EV households, 400A is over-spec and adds $5K+ for capacity you won't use.
How long does the load calc + EV install take total?
From quote to operational EV charger: 1-2 weeks for typical Marin scope when no panel upgrade is needed. Load calc happens during the quote visit (no separate appointment). Permit pulled within 1-3 business days. Install scheduled 3-7 days out, completed in 4-6 hours on install day. Inspection typically same week or following week. When a panel upgrade IS needed, total timeline extends to 3-4 weeks including PG&E coordination for the meter pull. We share specific timeline at quote signing.
How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. California State License Board C-10 Electrical Contractor #989290, in good standing. Carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance as required by California law.
