Marin County · Breaker & Panel Issues

Panel buzzing — not normal.

Electrical panels should be quiet. Buzzing or loud humming indicates issues with internal components — bad breakers, loose connections, or busbar problems.

TL;DR

Panel buzzing: same-day diagnostic appropriate. Loud buzzing or buzzing with smell/heat: emergency response. Common causes: failing breaker (most common, often the one buzzing is the culprit), loose connection at neutral bar or busbar, loose main breaker connection, sometimes transformer noise from utility side. Repair varies from single breaker replacement ($150-$300) to panel inspection and retorque ($300-$600) to panel replacement ($3,500-$6,500) depending on findings.

01Why panels shouldn't buzz.

Normal electrical panels are silent in operation. Current flows through solid metal busbars, breakers operate via solid contacts when closed, neutrals connect via clamped or screwed terminals. No moving parts during normal operation; nothing should vibrate or arc. Buzzing means something is vibrating or arcing — which means something is loose, damaged, or operating at the edge of failure.

The 60 Hz vibration from electrical current can manifest as buzzing when a component is loose enough to be moved by the magnetic forces involved. This is most common in: failing breakers where internal contacts have worn enough to move during operation, loose connections at busbar or neutral bar that vibrate slightly during current flow, sometimes the main breaker itself when its connection is loose. The vibration is mild but creates the audible buzz, and it indicates the connection isn't tight enough — which generates heat (resistance heating) over time.

02Identification.

Localize the source

Listen carefully without touching the panel. Sometimes you can identify which breaker or area is buzzing. The buzzing breaker is typically the issue — though sometimes vibration carries through the panel making the source unclear.

Note timing

Constant buzzing vs intermittent. Buzzing tied to specific loads (HVAC starting, large appliance) vs constant. Buzzing that started recently vs always-present. All useful information for diagnosis.

Check for heat or smell

Approach cautiously to feel for warmth near the panel (without touching). Check for any burning smell. Heat + buzzing or smell + buzzing escalates to emergency.

03Diagnostic and repair.

Electrician opens panel (with appropriate safety procedures — main breaker off, verifying components are de-energized as needed), inspects for visible damage, identifies buzzing component. Common findings: single bad breaker that needs replacement (often the home's most-used circuit's breaker, like kitchen or HVAC), loose connection at neutral or ground bar that needs retorque, main breaker connection issue, or in older panels, multiple aging components.

Repair scope: single bad breaker replacement $150-$300. Multiple breaker replacements + retorque all connections $400-$900. Loose main breaker connection: $300-$600 (may require PG&E coordination if main service work needed). Full panel replacement (for older panels with multiple aging components or known-issue brands): $3,500-$6,500. Most Marin panel buzzing resolves at single breaker replacement or modest panel inspection scope.

Common questions.

Could it be the doorbell transformer?

Doorbell transformers and similar small low-voltage transformers (often mounted in or near the panel) do hum audibly. If hum source is the small transformer rather than the panel itself: it's normal (or transformer is failing and needs replacement). Visual identification: the transformer is a small block usually mounted to or near the panel exterior; the panel itself is the main service equipment. Sound from inside the panel vs the small adjacent transformer is the distinction.

How urgent is panel buzzing?

Same-day diagnostic for any unusual panel sound. Emergency response if loud, accompanied by smell or heat. Panel issues can escalate quickly — buzzing today can become smoking next week or fire next month. Don't delay diagnostic on the assumption it'll be fine.

Will replacing the panel solve this?

Often yes when the existing panel is older (40+ years) or known-issue brand (Federal Pacific Stab-Lok, Zinsco). Panel replacement addresses multiple aging components at once and provides modern safety features (AFCI, GFCI, surge protection). For newer panels: targeted component replacement is more cost-effective than full replacement.

Can I temporarily silence the buzzing?

No safe way. The buzzing is a symptom of the underlying issue; muting the symptom doesn't address the issue. Don't try to dampen the panel with foam, tape, or other materials — these can create fire hazards. Address the root cause via electrician diagnostic.

How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?

Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.

How quickly can you schedule?

Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.

What warranty do you offer on work?

Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. California State License Board C-10 Electrical Contractor #989290, in good standing. Carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance as required by California law. Bondable on projects requiring it. Happy to provide proof of insurance to clients or property managers on request. License lookup: cslb.ca.gov.
