Outlet dead? Check these three things first.
Most dead-outlet situations have one of three causes — and two of them you can troubleshoot yourself in five minutes. This guide walks through the diagnostic sequence and when professional repair is needed.

01The three common causes (in order of likelihood).
About 70-80% of dead-outlet calls turn out to be a tripped GFCI somewhere else on the circuit — usually in a bathroom, kitchen, garage, or exterior outlet that homeowners forget is in the same circuit chain. Modern code requires GFCI protection on entire circuits in many cases, which means tripping the GFCI in the bathroom can de-energize the bedroom outlet downstream of it.
Another 15-20% are tripped breakers — sometimes obvious (the breaker visibly midway between ON and OFF), sometimes subtle (the breaker looks ON but has internally tripped). The remaining cases involve actual wiring/outlet issues: loose backstabs, failed outlet receptacles, or broken wire connections at junction boxes. These are the ones that require electrician attention.

02Diagnostic sequence to run yourself.
1. Check every GFCI in your house
Press the RESET button on every GFCI outlet — kitchen, bathrooms, garage, exterior, basement. Even GFCIs that look fine may have tripped. If one of them resets with a click, that's your culprit.
2. Check the breaker panel
Find the breaker for the affected circuit. Even if it looks ON, firmly turn it fully OFF, then fully ON. Internal trips don't always look obvious from outside.
3. Test the outlet with a known-good device
Some 'dead outlets' are actually working — the issue is a failed lamp or device. Plug a working lamp or phone charger into the outlet to confirm it's actually dead.
03When to call an electrician.
If steps 1-3 above don't restore power, the issue is likely inside the outlet or its wiring — a loose backstab connection (very common in homes built 1970s-1990s), a failed receptacle, or a broken connection at a junction box. These require opening the outlet box, which is electrician work both for safety and because incorrect re-wiring creates code issues and fire risk.
Same-day service is appropriate for dead outlets if the outlet is in a high-use location (kitchen, primary workspace) or if multiple outlets are dead simultaneously (which suggests a circuit-level issue rather than single-outlet failure). Single dead outlet in a low-use location can wait for scheduled appointment without safety concern.

Not usually by itself — a truly dead outlet (no power) isn't an active fire risk. But the underlying cause might be: loose backstab connections that intermittently arc, damaged wires in junction boxes, or failed neutral connections that cause voltage on grounding conductors. These conditions can escalate. Dead outlets aren't urgent like burning smells are, but they shouldn't be left unrepaired indefinitely.
Why do GFCIs trip outlets that aren't in the bathroom?
GFCI protection often covers an entire downstream circuit, not just the outlet where the GFCI device is mounted. So a kitchen-counter GFCI may protect outlets in adjacent rooms; a bathroom GFCI may protect the bedroom outlets behind it. Modern code requires GFCI protection in many circuit configurations, so tripping the bathroom GFCI can knock out a bedroom outlet. Worth pressing RESET on every GFCI in the house when troubleshooting any dead outlet.
Should I try replacing the outlet myself?
Generally not recommended. While replacing a duplex receptacle looks simple, the failure points that cause dead outlets (backstab connections, wire nut failures, neutral issues) often hide in the junction box wiring — and incorrect re-wiring can create code violations and fire risk. Electricians replace outlets routinely; cost is small ($180-$320 typically for single outlet replacement during a service call), and you get warranty plus code-compliant install.
What if multiple outlets are dead?
Multiple simultaneously-dead outlets usually means circuit-level failure rather than individual outlet failure. Common causes: tripped breaker that's not obvious, failed neutral connection at the panel or in an upstream junction box, or in older homes, deteriorated wiring at a critical splice. Multiple dead outlets warrants same-day electrician service — these issues sometimes precede more serious electrical problems.
