TL;DR
An outlet noticeably warmer than room temperature (especially if hot to touch) indicates heat being generated at the connection — loose wires, damaged contacts, or overloaded circuit. Turn off breaker, don't use outlet, call electrician. Slightly warm outlets in heavy-use locations (refrigerator, microwave) may be marginal — still worth diagnostic, less urgent.
01Normal vs concerning warmth.
Outlets in normal operation should be approximately room temperature. The plastic outlet body has poor thermal conductivity, so it shouldn't transmit much heat from internal connections even under load. Outlets serving heavy loads (refrigerator, electric water heater junction, microwave) may run slightly warm — a degree or two above room temperature in steady state. This is on the edge of normal.
Concerning: outlets noticeably warm (4-5+ degrees above room temp), hot to touch, or with temperature variation that responds to load. These signal heat generation at the connection. The cause: usually high-resistance contact at the wire-to-outlet screws (loose or corroded) or worn outlet contacts (after years of use, the spring-tension contacts can lose grip on plug prongs).

02Where to assess and what to do.
Touch test
Briefly touch the outlet faceplate with the back of your hand. Room temperature: fine. Slightly warm (noticeable but not uncomfortable): worth a diagnostic visit, not urgent. Distinctly hot (uncomfortable to touch): turn off the breaker, call same-day.
Specific high-use outlets
Refrigerator outlets, microwave outlets, electric range/cooktop area outlets, hair dryer bathroom outlets — these run more current routinely. Some warmth is expected. Hot is not. If you suspect overload (running a high-current device on an undersized circuit): electrician can verify with current measurement during use.
Outlets with loose plugs
If a plug feels loose in the outlet (wiggles, falls out), the outlet's contacts are worn. Worn contacts = high resistance = heat generation. Replace the outlet. Cost: $100-$250. Loose plugs also create arcing risk during normal use.
03Cost and scope of repair.
Outlet replacement with proper torque on wire connections: $100-$250 typical including diagnostic. If multiple outlets on the circuit show warming: comprehensive circuit inspection $250-$500. If circuit needs upgrade (load exceeds wire/breaker capacity routinely): dedicated circuit installation or panel work $400-$1,400.
Most warming outlet issues resolve in single-visit repair. The diagnostic and replacement is straightforward when accessed early. Letting it progress to scorching or burning escalates scope and cost (and risks fire damage). Rough guideline: room temperature plus 5°F is the upper edge of normal for routine outlets. Plus 10°F is concerning. Plus 20°F (distinctly hot) is urgent. Practical test: touch faceplate; if it feels warm/hot relative to surrounding wall material, take action. Most adults can detect 5°F variation by touch reasonably reliably.
What if it's only hot when something is plugged in?
That's load-driven heating — high resistance at the outlet means the load current generates heat through that resistance. Diagnostic same as any hot outlet. The fact that it correlates with load doesn't make it less urgent — load-driven heating is exactly the failure mode that leads to fire (heat keeps increasing as long as load remains).
Could this be normal for old outlets?
Not really. Old outlets in good condition shouldn't warm noticeably. Old outlets that have worn-out contacts or aged connections do warm — and they should be replaced. 'Old and warm' is the problem, not normal aging.
Is this a sign my panel is overloaded?
Possible. Chronic overload — running close to circuit capacity routinely — heats wires throughout the circuit including at outlets. If multiple outlets on the same circuit warm during use: circuit may be undersized for current load. Diagnostic: measure actual current under typical use, compare to circuit rating. Solution may be load redistribution to other circuits, dedicated new circuit for heavy loads, or panel-level work.
