How do I know if my facility has three-phase available?
Check service entrance: three-phase services have three hot conductors plus neutral (4 conductors total) entering the main panel; single-phase has two hots plus neutral (3 conductors). Service voltage label on main breaker also indicates: 240V/120V single-phase, 208Y/120V three-phase wye, or 480Y/277V three-phase wye are common Marin configurations. Can I run three-phase machinery on single-phase service?
Sometimes, via phase converters. Rotary phase converters create synthetic three-phase from single-phase input at ~$2,000-$8,000 for typical machinery scope. VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives) can do similar conversion for individual motors. Trade-offs: efficiency loss, hardware cost, more complexity. For one or two machines, phase conversion can be cost-effective; for several machines, upgrading service to three-phase via PG&E (when available) makes more sense long-term.
Does PG&E provide three-phase to all locations?
No — three-phase service availability depends on the existing utility infrastructure at your location. Industrial parks typically have three-phase available. Mixed-use or formerly-residential locations may require utility line extension or transformer upgrade, which involves PG&E engineering, cost-sharing analysis, and 4-9 month timelines. We coordinate PG&E applications for clients requiring three-phase service upgrades.
What's the difference between 208V and 480V three-phase?
Both are three-phase but at different voltages. 208V three-phase (line-to-line) with 120V line-to-neutral common in light commercial. 480V three-phase (line-to-line) with 277V line-to-neutral common in industrial — allows smaller conductors for same power (current = power ÷ voltage), reducing copper cost on larger services. 480V also enables direct fluorescent/HID lighting at 277V. Most Marin industrial clients run 480V; smaller commercial runs 208V.
How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. California State License Board C-10 Electrical Contractor #989290, in good standing. Carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance as required by California law.
