Lighting scenes — three buttons that change how a room feels.

A 'scene' is one button press that activates multiple lights at specific levels — Welcome, Evening, Dinner, Goodnight. Done well, scenes transform how you actually use a house. Done badly, scenes get programmed once and never touched. The design matters more than the technology.

TL;DR

Lighting scenes are pre-set combinations of multiple fixtures at specific brightness levels, activated by a single keypad button or smartphone tap. Good scene design follows real use patterns (Morning, Daytime, Evening, Late Night), groups fixtures by zone, and tunes levels through 30 days of actual living. Available in Lutron Caséta (basic), RadioRA 3 (full), HomeWorks (advanced), and other major lighting control systems.

01What good scene design looks like.

The default temptation is to design too many scenes. 12 scenes for a kitchen ('Morning Coffee', 'Breakfast', 'Lunch', 'Dinner Prep', 'Dinner', 'Cleanup', 'After Dinner'…) sounds thorough but nobody remembers which button to press. The result: most scenes never used; defaults always used. Better approach: 3-5 scenes per major room based on actual life transitions. Kitchen: Bright (cooking/cleanup), Comfort (background), Off. Living room: Daytime, Evening Wind-Down, Movie, Off. Most spaces work fine with 3-4 well-designed scenes.

Tuning levels is what separates good scenes from generic ones. The default 'Dinner' scene from any lighting designer is dim downlights + accent at 40%. The CORRECT 'Dinner' scene for your specific dining room with your specific dining table and your specific overhead pendant might be downlights at 18%, pendant at 45%, wall sconces at 60%, art accents at 80%. The right levels come from actually living with the lighting for 30 days and tuning. We include scene tuning visits in our scope post-install.

02Scenes that actually get used.

Welcome / Arrival

Walking in from garage or front door. Entry light, kitchen general, living room comfort levels — all at once with one button. Makes coming home effortless.

Evening Wind-Down

Around dinner through bedtime. Warm low downlights, accents at moderate, harsh fixtures off. The single scene most households use most often.

Goodnight / All Off

Single button kills everything (interior + exterior optional). Replaces walking through every room to turn things off. Universally beloved.

Movie / TV

Family room evening watching mode. Bias lighting behind TV, low ambient elsewhere, accents off. Maybe shades down if motorized.

Party / Entertaining

Brighter than evening but warmer than full bright. Lots of accent. Music-room or kitchen-island highlights. Used in 5-10% of evenings but valued when needed.

03Programming approaches by system.

System Scene capability Programming difficulty
Lutron Caséta Basic scenes via app, no keypad buttons DIY-friendly via app
Lutron RadioRA 3 Full keypad-based scenes, up to 16 per keypad Moderate, app-based
Lutron HomeWorks QSX Unlimited scenes, deep customization Professional (Lutron certified)
Crestron / Savant Unlimited via integrator Professional only
Apple HomeKit (mixed brands) Scenes via Home app DIY but limited control depth

Common questions.

How many scenes should I have?

3-5 per major room, total of 12-25 across the home. More than that gets unmemorable. The scene count isn't the goal — the goal is the right scenes for actual life transitions. Start small (Welcome, Evening, Off) and add scenes only when you notice a specific need ('I keep manually adjusting lights when guests arrive — that should be a scene').

Can I program scenes myself?

Caséta yes via the app. RadioRA 3 mostly yes with some learning curve. HomeWorks QSX no — that's professional software. We include initial programming for any system we install, plus 2-3 tune-up visits in the first 60 days as you live with the lighting. After that, ongoing tweaks are usually customer-managed for Caséta/RadioRA 3 or billable visits for HomeWorks.

Do scenes work with voice assistants?

Yes for all major systems. 'Hey Siri, set Evening' or 'Alexa, party mode' works once scenes are programmed and the lighting system is connected to the voice assistant ecosystem. Voice control is most useful for scenes that are commonly invoked (Evening, Goodnight) and less useful for one-off adjustments (turn the kitchen dimmer up just a hair). Both have their place.

What if my needs change — can scenes be updated?

Yes, easily. Scenes are software — change them through the app (Caséta, RadioRA 3) or have us update via the programming software (HomeWorks). Most scenes evolve over the first 6-12 months as you discover what you actually want. After that, they tend to stabilize and only need occasional tuning. We expect this evolution; the 2-3 tune-up visits in initial scope cover the active learning period.

How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?

Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.

How quickly can you schedule?

Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.

What warranty do you offer on work?

Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. California State License Board C-10 Electrical Contractor #989290, in good standing. Carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance as required by California law. Bondable on projects requiring it. Happy to provide proof of insurance to clients or property managers on request. License lookup: cslb.ca.gov.
