Residential Electrical Services · Pillar Guide
Recessed lighting, layered design, dimmer selection, and Lutron lighting control — the work that turns generic illumination into rooms that work for the way you actually use them.

Residential lighting work is one of the highest-impact electrical scopes by ROI — the work transforms how rooms feel and how the family uses them daily, not just whether the lights work. Done well, it's invisible infrastructure; done poorly, it's a daily source of frustration. The most common preventable mistake we see in Marin homes is flat, single-source lighting on a single switch — adequate for code but not for living.
Layered lighting (ambient + task + accent) with proper dimming control is the upgrade most Marin homeowners benefit from most. The hardware cost is modest; the install cost is moderate; the daily quality-of-life improvement is significant. For estate-class homes, Lutron RadioRA 3 with full scene control extends the concept across the entire home — but Caseta delivers 80% of the value for typical single-family homes at a fraction of the cost.
Residential lighting installation covers fixture installation/replacement, recessed lighting retrofit, dimmer installation and selection, and lighting control system integration (Lutron Caseta, RadioRA 3, Crestron, Control4) — distinct from low-voltage AV/automation programming which is the integrator's scope.
Original-build lighting in homes from the 1950s-80s was minimal — typically one ceiling fixture per room on a single switch. The contemporary expectation (multiple light layers, dimming, smart control) requires retrofit work that wasn't anticipated in the original build.
Caseta is the wireless platform for typical homes (under 30-40 control points). RadioRA 3 is the wired platform for estates (50-200+ control points, deep scene customization, integration with shades and AV). Most Marin single-family homes are Caseta candidates; the luxury peninsula is RadioRA 3 territory.

|---|---|---|
| Recessed lighting, 6-8 cans (one room) | $650 to $1,400 | Includes dimmer; vaulted ceiling adds 20-30% |
| Fixture replacement (same location) | $140 to $320 | Per fixture; designer fixtures higher |
| Pendant install (new location) | $280 to $520 | Includes new junction box and circuit pull |
| Lutron Caseta whole-home retrofit | $2,800 to $6,500 | Typical 12-20 device install |

The single most common lighting service call we get is 'my lights flicker' or 'my dimmer buzzes.' The diagnosis is almost always dimmer-bulb incompatibility, not a defective dimmer or defective bulbs. Modern LED bulbs require dimmer types matched to their internal driver — incompatible combinations produce flickering at low brightness, buzzing audible at certain settings, or limited dimming range (the bulb works fine at 100% but won't go below 30%).
We spec dimmer-bulb compatibility upfront. For each room, we check the LED bulb model against the dimmer's published compatibility list (Lutron, Leviton, and Legrand all publish these). The result is dimmable lighting that actually dims smoothly from 1-100% without flickering or buzzing. This is one of those details that distinguishes a good install from a frustrating one.
Layered lighting means three distinct light sources per room, each controllable independently and ideally on dimmer. The three layers serve different purposes.
The base layer — typically recessed cans, overhead pendants, or wall sconces providing even room-wide light. Dimmed during evening hours, brighter during day.
Under-cabinet lighting in kitchens, bedside reading lights, vanity lighting in bathrooms. Provides concentrated light for specific activities.
Picture lights, cove lighting, focused spots on architectural features. The layer that turns a room from functional to designed.
The realistic 3-phase timeline for a moderate-scope lighting retrofit (one or two rooms, Lutron Caseta control, recessed + accent layers).
