01What each install type involves.

Plug-in (NEMA 14-50)

Install a NEMA 14-50 240V outlet (the same outlet RVs use for shore power). Plug the EV charger's cord into the outlet. NEC limits plug-in EVSE to 40A continuous (50A breaker, 40A charging). Portable — you can take the charger when you move.

Hardwired

Direct-wire the EV charger to the circuit — no outlet, no plug. Supports up to 48A continuous (60A breaker, 48A charging) per NEC. Cleaner looking install (no exposed plug). Permanent — moving the charger requires an electrician.

Cost difference

Plug-in install costs about $150-$300 less than hardwired (saves on charger hardware, which costs $0-$200 less without the included cord). Most modern Tesla/Wallbox/ChargePoint chargers come in both versions; the price differential is similar.

02When each makes sense.

Plug-in makes sense for: renters with landlord permission to install the outlet (they leave the charger when they move), people who want to take a Level 2 charger to a vacation home or second property, and households that anticipate moving in 2-5 years and want portable charging hardware. The 40A limit isn't restrictive for most use cases — adds 36 mph of range vs 44 mph at 48A, fully replenishes overnight either way for typical drivers.

Hardwired makes sense for: anyone wanting the fastest possible charging speed (48A), permanent installs where portability doesn't matter, and aesthetic preferences for a cleaner mounted look without exposed plugs. Code-wise, hardwired has one fewer potential failure point (no plug-receptacle interface that can develop high-resistance contact over time). For most Marin permanent home installs, hardwired is our default recommendation.

03Common considerations.

NEMA 14-50 outlets installed for plug-in EV charging must be on a GFCI breaker per current NEC (NEC 625.54 requires GFCI for outdoor and garage receptacle outlets supplying EV charging). Some legacy installations skip this; new installs must include it. The GFCI requirement adds about $80-$120 to outlet install cost.

Plug-in NEMA 14-50 outlets have a documented failure mode at high continuous current — the outlet contacts can develop high resistance over time, causing heat buildup at the plug. Quality outlets (Bryant, Hubbell industrial grade) are reliable; cheap homeowner-grade outlets sometimes fail with EV use. We install Bryant or equivalent industrial-grade NEMA 14-50 outlets for EV applications — slight cost premium but eliminates the most common plug-in failure mode.

Common questions.

Is plug-in or hardwired safer?

Both are safe when properly installed. Hardwired has one fewer potential failure point (no plug-receptacle interface). Plug-in with a quality industrial-grade outlet is essentially equivalent in safety; plug-in with a cheap consumer-grade outlet has higher failure rates. The safety difference is real but small with quality components. Most insurance carriers and code authorities treat them equivalently. We use industrial-grade outlets for any plug-in install.

Can I switch from plug-in to hardwired later?

Yes — relatively straightforward. Most plug-in EV chargers (Tesla, Wallbox, ChargePoint, Emporia) have hardwired conversion options where you remove the plug end and direct-wire to the circuit. Typical conversion: $150-$300 for the electrician visit to do the conversion, plus possible breaker change (50A plug-in to 60A hardwired). Some chargers ship with both options included; others require a specific hardwired variant. Easy to do later if you start plug-in.

Do all chargers come in both versions?

Most modern Level 2 chargers offer both, but check before buying. Tesla Wall Connector Gen 3 is hardwired only (no plug-in version). Wallbox Pulsar Plus comes in both — they're different SKUs. ChargePoint Home Flex comes in both. Emporia EV Charger comes in both. If portability matters, verify the plug-in variant exists for your chosen brand before ordering.

What's the maximum amperage I can get with plug-in?

40A continuous (50A breaker per NEC's 80% rule for continuous loads on plug-and-receptacle connections). Adds 36 mph of range — excellent for nearly any home charging scenario. The 48A continuous rating (60A breaker) is only available on hardwired installs. For most drivers, the 4-8 mph speed difference doesn't matter overnight; portability or hardwired-cleanliness matters more.

How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?

Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.

How quickly can you schedule?

Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.

What warranty do you offer on work?
