Can I integrate my existing EV charger into my smart home later?
Depends on the charger. Most 2022+ smart chargers have APIs or integration capabilities that can be added later. Older 'dumb' EV chargers (basic Level 2 without smart features) generally can't be retrofitted for smart integration — replacing them is required. The good news: smart EV chargers don't cost meaningfully more than dumb ones at current pricing, so the upgrade case is strong if you're charger-shopping anyway.
Does time-of-use scheduling really save money?
Yes, meaningfully — for households on PG&E EV2-A or E-TOU rate plans, the difference between peak and off-peak EV charging is typically $0.20-$0.30/kWh. For a typical EV using 8-12 kWh overnight: $1.60-$3.60/day savings, or $580-$1,300/year. Worth scheduling charging to off-peak hours via smart charger or smart home automation. The annual savings pay back the smart charger premium quickly.
How does smart EV charger coordinate with solar?
Different chargers have different solar coordination capabilities. Best-in-class: charger detects solar surplus in real-time and charges only from surplus power (vs grid). Mid-tier: charger has 'solar mode' that prioritizes charging during daylight hours but doesn't actively meter solar production. Basic: no solar integration. For solar households, choosing a charger with active solar coordination delivers meaningful additional savings on top of time-of-use.
What if my smart home hub fails?
EV chargers retain basic functionality (charging when plugged in, manual scheduling via charger's own controls) even when smart home automation is unavailable. The integration adds features on top of standalone operation; it doesn't replace standalone operation. So a hub failure means you lose advanced automation temporarily, but the EV still charges normally.
How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. California State License Board C-10 Electrical Contractor #989290, in good standing. Carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance as required by California law.
