03Planning for integration up front.

If smart home integration matters, choose the EV charger with that in mind — not all smart chargers integrate equally well with all smart home systems. Tesla Wall Connector integrates excellently with Tesla solar/Powerwall but limitedly with non-Tesla systems. Wallbox Pulsar Plus has broad integration including HomeAssistant. Different chargers have different solar coordination capabilities. Best-in-class: charger detects solar surplus in real-time and charges only from surplus power (vs grid). Mid-tier: charger has 'solar mode' that prioritizes charging during daylight hours but doesn't actively meter solar production. Basic: no solar integration. For solar households, choosing a charger with active solar coordination delivers meaningful additional savings on top of time-of-use.

What if my smart home hub fails?

EV chargers retain basic functionality (charging when plugged in, manual scheduling via charger's own controls) even when smart home automation is unavailable. The integration adds features on top of standalone operation; it doesn't replace standalone operation. So a hub failure means you lose advanced automation temporarily, but the EV still charges normally.

How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?

Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find.
