Will load management slow down my charging?
Marginally, only when other heavy loads are running simultaneously with EV charging. For typical overnight charging patterns (start charging when you arrive home, charge through the night), the throttling impact is minimal — most overnight hours have low household demand. Households that charge during peak hours (immediately after work while running HVAC, oven, dryer) see more throttling. We track real-world data on this: typical Marin households see less than 5% reduction in total daily charging delivered after load management is installed.
Can I use load management on any EV charger?
Not quite — it works best when the EV charger has a control input for load management signals. Most modern Level 2 chargers (Tesla Wall Connector, Wallbox Pulsar Plus, ChargePoint Home Flex) support load management either built-in or via accessory devices. Cheap unbranded chargers often don't support load management — another reason to choose a reputable brand for new installs. We confirm compatibility when planning the install.
Is load management as reliable as a panel upgrade?
It's reliable but adds a system component that can fail. Panel upgrades remove the load-calc problem entirely; load management manages it actively. Modern load management devices are reliable (5-10 year lifespan typical) and fail safely (charging stops, doesn't cause overload). For households planning to stay in the home long-term and add more electrical loads in coming years (heat pump, second EV, induction range), panel upgrade is the more permanent solution. For shorter horizons or single-EV households, load management is excellent value.
Does PG&E approve load management installations?
Yes — load management is recognized by NEC, accepted by AHJs across Marin, and supported by PG&E's EV charger program. Some PG&E rebate programs specifically encourage load management as an alternative to full panel upgrades. The install does require a permit (same as any EV charger install) and passes inspection like any other EV install. No special PG&E approval beyond standard EV charger registration.
How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. California State License Board C-10 Electrical Contractor #989290, in good standing. Carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance as required by California law.
