NEC 408.4 requires every circuit in a panel to be clearly identified. In practice, most Marin home panels we open have schedules that are illegible, out of date, or never filled out at all. Proper labeling identifies each circuit's specific use and location and takes 1.5-3 hours to do well — typically $280-$520 as a standalone service, included free with any other electrical work.

01What NEC actually requires.

NEC 408.4(A) states: 'Every circuit and circuit modification shall be legibly identified as to its clear, evident, and specific purpose or use.' The standard is not 'roughly labeled' — it's 'clear, evident, and specific.' That means 'Bedrooms' is insufficient; 'Master bedroom outlets + east-wall ceiling fan' is correct.

The code also requires identification to be 'sufficiently durable to withstand the environment involved' — meaning panel schedules in pencil that smudge off, or stickers that yellow and curl, don't meet the standard either. Engraved labels, laminated cards, or panel schedule printouts in document sleeves all qualify.

02What good labeling looks like.

A properly labeled panel has multiple layers — not just the schedule inside the cover.

Detailed panel schedule

Each circuit identified by amperage, purpose, AND location. 'Kitchen GFCI counter outlets — south wall' is correct. 'Kitchen' alone is not.

Cover-side legend for high-priority circuits

Many modern panel covers have label space on the door interior. We use this for emergency-critical circuits — main breaker, HVAC disconnect, EV charger, generator transfer — so an emergency responder can find them in seconds.

Receptacle-side labels on dedicated circuits

Dedicated circuits (refrigerator, sump pump, server rack, medical equipment) get visible labels at the receptacle indicating dedicated status — prevents accidental sharing that defeats the dedication.

Updated when circuits change

Every time we touch a panel — adding circuits, replacing breakers, reorganizing — the schedule gets updated. Outdated labels mislead more than no labels at all.

The actual use case for clear labeling is the moment something is wrong. A water leak near a bedroom outlet — which circuit do you turn off? A burning smell from a kitchen appliance — which breaker isolates it without killing the whole kitchen? A medical emergency where equipment needs to stay powered while everything else shuts down — can you find the right circuit in 30 seconds?

These are the moments labeling justifies itself. The cost of proper labeling is small relative to the cost of mis-shutting-off the wrong circuit during an actual incident, or fumbling through a panel for two minutes while a problem progresses. Treat it as cheap insurance against your future panicked self.

Is panel labeling required by code?

Yes. NEC 408.4(A) requires every circuit be legibly identified by 'clear, evident, and specific purpose or use.' This is enforced at inspection on new panel installations and panel upgrades. For existing panels, it's not actively inspected, but the requirement still applies — and home inspectors during real estate transactions will flag missing or inadequate labeling.

How much does panel labeling cost as a standalone service?

You can, and it's a worthwhile weekend project. The challenge is doing it right — identifying every circuit's specific purpose AND location, getting dedicated circuits labeled at both panel and receptacle, and documenting it durably enough to stay readable for years. Most DIY labeling we see is 40-70% correct, which is better than nothing but leaves gaps.

What if my circuits aren't where the existing labels say they are?

Common. Outdated labels are everywhere — circuits got rearranged during past panel work, dedicated circuits drifted to shared use, original labeler made guesses. The labeling service includes verification — we physically test each circuit to confirm what it actually controls, not what the old schedule claimed. Discrepancies get documented and corrected.

Do dedicated circuits need labels at the outlet too?

Yes, and most don't have them. A dedicated circuit's value depends on it staying dedicated — if maintenance staff or future occupants don't know an outlet is dedicated, they share other loads into it and defeat the purpose. Outlet-side labels on dedicated circuits are part of proper labeling and we include them as standard.

Should commercial panels be labeled the same way?

Commercial labeling is more involved — more circuits, more sub-panels, more dedicated equipment. NEC 408.4 applies the same way but the documentation burden is higher. Commercial labeling typically runs $480-$1,800 depending on circuit count, and we recommend it be updated at every major electrical change.

How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?

Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.

How quickly can you schedule?

Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical.
