Electrical hazards are the most time-sensitive emergency category we respond to. Unlike outages (where the worst case is being without power), active electrical hazards are progressing toward fire, equipment damage, or injury in real time. The right response is containment first (shut off the circuit if safely possible, evacuate to safe distance if smoke or fire is present, call 911 if appropriate), then call us for proper diagnostic and remediation.
What we see in hazard response: burning smells from outlets/panels/fixtures (the most common — usually a loose connection overheating), visible sparking or arcing (active arc fault), charred or melted devices (failed connection that's already caused damage), exposed wiring after impact damage (immediate shock hazard), and occasionally smoke without visible flame (early-stage fire pathway). Each category has a specific diagnostic and remediation approach.
'Electrical hazard response' is the emergency diagnostic and remediation work for situations involving active electrical danger — burning smells, sparks, exposed wiring, charred equipment — where time-sensitivity is high due to progressing safety risk.
For most electrical hazards: 1) Don't touch the affected equipment. 2) Shut off the affected circuit at the panel (or main breaker if safer). 3) Evacuate to safe distance if smoke or sparks are present. 4) Call 911 if active fire is visible or smoke is spreading. 5) Call us for electrical diagnostic and remediation.
Beyond stopping the visible symptom, proper remediation finds the underlying cause and replaces failed components. Burning smell = find the failing connection and replace it. Sparks = find the arc-fault location and remediate. Don't just power-cycle the circuit and assume it's fine — failed connections often re-fail.

These hazard categories cover the bulk of emergency response calls. Each has a specific recognition pattern and response approach.
Most common hazard symptom — connection overheating somewhere on the circuit. Source can be hard to locate without diagnostic equipment because the smell travels through wall cavities. Containment: shut off circuit, call immediately.
Active arc fault visible at outlets, switches, or panels. Equipment damage is happening in real-time. Containment: shut off circuit at panel (use main breaker if affected circuit can't be identified), don't approach until power confirmed off.
Already-failed connection — the overheating event has happened. Risk is now of recurrence if cause isn't identified. Don't reuse the device; full replacement of device and assessment of branch wiring required.
Storm damage, vehicle accidents, or construction mishaps that expose energized wiring. Immediate shock hazard. Maintain safe distance, prevent others from approaching, call us — sometimes PG&E coordination needed for service-side damage.
Early-stage electrical fire — insulation is burning but flame isn't visible yet. Highest urgency category. Evacuate, call 911, then call us. Don't attempt to investigate the source yourself.
Burning plastic smell from electrical equipment isn't 'might be a problem' — it's an active overheating event in progress. The smell is the wire insulation or device housing reaching breakdown temperature (typically 200-300°F). At that temperature, the insulation is degrading and the underlying conductor is approaching failure. The progression from 'first smell' to 'real fire' is hours, not days.
Root cause is almost always a loose or failing connection somewhere on the circuit. As the connection point heats from current flow, the surrounding insulation degrades, the conductor's resistance increases, the heating accelerates, and eventually the connection point fails — sometimes with visible spark/arc, sometimes with flame ignition of the surrounding material. The right response is finding the failing connection (often requires opening multiple junction boxes on the circuit) and replacing it with proper torque-spec connections.
Hazard response calls are tempting to handle with quick fixes — replace the visibly-failed outlet, reset the breaker, declare the issue resolved. The problem: visible symptom is downstream of the actual cause. A charred outlet usually means there's a loose connection somewhere on the circuit causing overheating; replacing just the outlet doesn't address the loose connection that caused the failure. The original cause remains, and the hazard re-emerges weeks or months later at a different location on the same circuit.
Proper hazard diagnostic involves opening multiple junction boxes on the affected circuit, identifying the actual failed connection (often not where the symptom appeared), torque-spec replacement of all suspect connections, and thermal-imaging verification that the repair eliminated the hot spot. More time-consuming than a quick outlet swap; dramatically more reliable as a long-term fix. We do the proper diagnostic on every hazard response — it's the difference between a fix that lasts and a fix that re-fails.
The distinction between electrical emergency and fire/medical emergency. Some situations require 911 first.
Any visible flame in or near electrical equipment = active fire = 911 first. Fire department contains the immediate threat; we respond to the electrical remediation after the fire is out.
Smoke that's spreading through the structure (not just localized to one device) = potential structural fire = 911 first. The fire might be in wall cavities where you can't see it.
Anyone shocked, burned, or otherwise injured by electrical contact = 911 first for medical response. We respond to electrical situation after medical priorities are addressed.
