A dedicated commercial circuit is a circuit serving exactly one piece of equipment — no shared loads, no other receptacles, its own breaker. The case for dedicated circuits comes from two directions: code requires them for specific equipment categories (refrigeration, dishwashers, fire alarm, medical equipment per NEC 210), and businesses voluntarily dedicate circuits for equipment where shared-circuit trips would cause material disruption (POS at dinner service, IT racks, copy/print equipment).
The cost premium for dedicated circuits over shared circuits is modest (typically $400-$900 per circuit vs $200-$400 for adding to existing) but the reliability gain is substantial. We size dedicated circuits per NEC 220 based on equipment nameplate data — voltage, amperage, continuous-load rating. The equipment vendor's spec sheet is the source of truth.
A dedicated commercial circuit is a single-purpose electrical circuit serving exactly one piece of equipment — its own breaker, conductors sized to NEC 220 requirements, and no other loads sharing the circuit.
NEC 210 requires dedicated circuits for refrigeration equipment (210.52(B)(1)), dishwashers, garbage disposals, fire alarm panels, security panels, and certain medical equipment. Most commercial buildouts have 8-15 code-required dedicated circuits.
Common applications where reliability justifies the cost: POS systems (dedicated + surge protection), IT/network racks (dedicated + UPS), copy/print equipment (dedicated due to inrush current), specialty kitchen equipment (combi ovens, sous vide, espresso machines), exterior signage.

Pricing for adding a single dedicated circuit varies by panel proximity, run distance, and circuit complexity.
New circuit within 30 feet of panel, simple run through accessible space. Most common voluntary dedicated circuit scenario.
30-80 foot run through finished space, may require fishing through walls or routing through ceiling/floor cavities.
Cross-suite runs, exterior signage circuits, trenching, or runs through occupied space requiring careful access management.

Sizing a dedicated commercial circuit starts with the equipment nameplate. NEC 220.5 requires circuit ampacity to be at least 125% of the continuous load (loads operating for 3+ hours), which means a 16-amp continuous load needs a 20-amp circuit. We pull the equipment nameplate from the vendor's documentation, calculate continuous vs non-continuous loads per NEC 220.50, and size both the breaker and the conductors to handle the larger of the two requirements.
For motor circuits (compressors, fans, large pumps), NEC 430 applies additional sizing rules — circuit ampacity at 125% of the motor's full-load current, with motor overload protection sized per nameplate. The result is sometimes a 25-amp breaker on a circuit with what looks like a 'small' 18-amp motor — that's the code-required margin, not contractor over-sizing.

Three issues we see on poorly-executed dedicated circuit work.
Contractor sizes breaker correctly but uses cheaper, smaller-gauge conductors that don't meet 125% continuous-load requirement. Passes initial inspection if inspector doesn't check; fails years later when equipment causes overheating in conductor.
In multi-wire branch circuits, the neutral is shared between phases. For equipment requiring true isolation (medical equipment, sensitive electronics), shared neutrals defeat the purpose of dedication. Spec must be confirmed against equipment requirements.
