01Why outlets go completely dead.

Outlets need three things to work: hot conductor, neutral conductor, and (for grounded outlets) ground conductor — all connected at the panel through the breaker and at the outlet through proper terminals. A 'completely dead' outlet has lost the hot side somewhere along that path. Could be at the breaker (off, tripped, or failed), at a GFCI upstream (tripped, providing GFCI protection that cuts power to downstream outlets), at the outlet itself (failed receptacle), or at a connection in between.

Most dead-outlet calls (probably 70%) trace to a tripped GFCI somewhere else in the house that the homeowner didn't realize was protecting the dead outlet's circuit. Modern wiring uses GFCI protection on entire circuits in many situations, so a kitchen GFCI can de-energize a bedroom outlet downstream of it. Pressing RESET on every GFCI in the house is the fastest diagnostic.

02Five-minute diagnostic sequence.

1. Walk the house, reset every GFCI

Every kitchen counter, every bathroom, every garage, every exterior, every basement. Press RESET firmly on each. If one clicks (rather than feeling like it's already reset), that was probably your culprit. Test the dead outlet.

2. Check the breaker panel

Find the breaker for the outlet's area. Even if it looks ON, firmly press OFF then ON. Internal trips don't always show externally. If multiple breakers look off, that's a clue about which circuit covers the dead outlet.

3. Test the outlet with a multimeter or known device

If you have a multimeter, measure between hot and neutral (should read 120V). If you don't, plug in a simple lamp you know works. Truly dead = no voltage = failure between panel and outlet.

03What we find on diagnostic visits.

When we arrive for a dead-outlet call, our first questions are: which GFCIs have you reset, which breakers have you cycled, when did it stop working, was there any event that might have caused it (renovation work, water damage, electrical storm, appliance failure on the circuit). Then we test the outlet with a multimeter to confirm dead, and trace the circuit back to find where the connection is broken.

Common findings: failed outlet receptacle (replace, $180-$320), loose connection at upstream outlet or junction box (re-terminate, $240-$420), failed neutral at panel (panel work, $240-$540), or in older homes, deteriorated splice inside a wall junction (wire replacement, scope varies). Most dead-outlet repairs complete in single visit; about 10% need follow-up work depending on what's found.

Common questions.

How can an outlet be dead without the breaker tripping?

Several ways: GFCI upstream tripped (provides protection without affecting the breaker), failed outlet receptacle (mechanical failure of the contacts), loose backstab connection that's failed open (very common in 1970s-1990s wiring), broken wire inside a junction box, failed splice at a junction. Breakers protect against overcurrent and (with AFCI/GFCI) certain fault types, but they don't trip just because an outlet has failed mechanically. Outlet failures often happen without breaker activity.

Could it just be a bad outlet?

Yes — outlets do fail mechanically. Failed receptacle contacts inside the outlet (the spring-loaded slots that grip plug prongs) are the most common cause of single-outlet failure. Outlets in high-cycle locations (kitchen counters, garages, exterior) fail more often than low-use outlets (closets, behind furniture). Replacement is straightforward and definitive — if outlet is failed, replacing it fixes the problem completely.

What if other outlets on the same wall still work?

That narrows the diagnosis to the dead outlet itself or to the wire between it and the next working outlet. If the dead outlet is the 'last in the chain' (no outlets downstream of it on the same circuit), failure is at the outlet or at its incoming connection. If working outlets are on the same circuit, the dead outlet alone has failed. Either way, the fix scope is limited to the dead outlet and its immediate junction box — not whole-circuit work.

Should I wait until I have multiple electrical issues before calling?

Not necessarily — dead-outlet diagnostic visits aren't more expensive when they're isolated. The cost of a service call is roughly the same whether we fix one outlet or four. If you have other minor electrical issues (a switch that doesn't work, an exterior outlet that's been dead for months, a missing GFCI you've been meaning to add), batch them into one visit and we'll handle them all.
