Diesel or natural gas for commercial generator?
Trade-off discussion. Diesel: highest power density, on-site fuel storage (insulation from natural gas service disruption), higher emissions, more maintenance. Natural gas: lower emissions, unlimited runtime when gas service is up, but dependent on gas service availability. For mission-critical Marin commercial: diesel with on-site fuel often preferred for resilience. For typical commercial backup: natural gas often makes economic sense. Site-specific factors include fuel availability, ambient noise considerations, emissions permitting.
How big a generator do I need?
Depends entirely on what loads need backup. Load study identifies essential loads — sometimes whole building, often subset (life safety only, plus IT and refrigeration). Generator sizing: peak coincident load + 25% buffer + starting load surge for largest motor. Sizes commonly 50, 100, 150, 200, 300, 500 kW. Larger isn't always better — oversized generators are wasteful and don't load adequately for engine health. We perform load study during planning.
What about emissions permitting?
California Air Resources Board (CARB) and BAAQMD (Bay Area Air Quality Management District) regulate stationary generator emissions. Most commercial generators require permit and have emissions limits. CARB Tier 4 Final emissions standards apply to diesel generators above certain sizes. Compliance is built into commercial generator selection — modern Tier 4 Final engines are standard for commercial diesel. Permitting handled as part of project scope; adds 4-8 weeks to timeline.
What ongoing maintenance is required?
Commercial generators need quarterly visual inspection, monthly exercise cycle (automated), annual full service (oil, filters, coolant, comprehensive inspection), 3-5 year load bank test. Most commercial owners contract with us or specialized generator service vendors for scheduled maintenance — typical cost $1,500-$5,000 annually depending on size. Maintenance neglect significantly shortens generator life and creates outage-day failure risk.
How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. California State License Board C-10 Electrical Contractor #989290, in good standing. Carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance as required by California law.
