Backup power replacement or supplement: battery provides immediate backup with no transfer gap, silent operation, no fuel storage. Limitation: runtime hours (4-12 hours typical) vs generator's days. Best for: businesses with short outage scenarios, locations where generators impractical (noise, emissions, fuel storage).
Peak shaving / demand management: PG&E commercial rate schedules include demand charges (penalty for high peak demand). Battery discharges during peak hours, reducing demand charges. Modular battery system. Smaller scale appropriate for small/medium commercial. 5-40 kWh systems common. Integration with Enphase solar inverters.
Generac PWRcell or similar
Mid-scale residential-style technology adapted for small commercial. 10-50 kWh systems. Battery backup focus over energy management.
03When commercial battery makes sense vs generator.
Battery favored when: short outage scenarios common (most outages under 4-6 hours), noise/emissions concerns important, fuel storage impractical, solar already installed (battery captures self-consumption value), demand charge management has meaningful economics. Premium upfront cost; favorable operating economics when scenarios align.
Generator favored when: extended outages common (multi-day PSPS events), backup runtime priority (days vs hours), natural gas service available (unlimited fuel during outages), economics prioritize upfront cost over operating cost. Lower upfront cost; substantial operating cost during use. Many Marin commercial choose generators for PSPS-frequency reality.

Should I add battery to my existing solar?
Often favorable economics. Battery captures self-consumption value (currently low NEM 3.0 export rates make export less valuable than self-consumption). Backup power capability adds significant value. Marin commercial with solar increasingly adding battery for combined economics and backup.
How long does commercial battery last?
Battery cycle life: 4,000-8,000 cycles typical for current technology. Daily cycling: 10-20+ year lifespan. Less frequent cycling (backup-only): 15-25+ year lifespan. Warranty typically 10 years; lifespan often exceeds warranty. Battery replacement cost current ~$300-$500 per kWh; expect declining.
Can battery replace generator entirely?
For short outages: yes. For extended outages (multi-day): single battery system runs out of stored energy. Hybrid approach (battery + generator) provides best protection: battery handles short outages silently, generator activates for extended outages. Premium configuration; standard for businesses prioritizing reliability.
How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.
