02Why load sharing is the typical Marin answer.

For most two-EV households in Marin, dual chargers with load sharing on a single circuit is the sweet spot. Both vehicles can be plugged in simultaneously; the chargers coordinate to split available amperage between them; when only one vehicle is charging, that vehicle gets full speed. This solves the panel-capacity question (one circuit, not two) while preserving the convenience of both vehicles plugged in overnight.

Load sharing works because most two-EV households don't actually need both vehicles charging at full rate simultaneously — typical pattern is both arrive home in evening, plug in, charge through night. The chargers can deliver 24A to each vehicle (when sharing a 48A circuit) or 30A to whichever is charging when the other finishes. Both fully replenish overnight. Households where both drivers cover 80-100+ miles per day and need fast overnight replenishment may benefit from independent full-speed circuits. Less common in Marin's commute patterns.

Different vehicle requirements

If one vehicle has a substantially higher onboard charger and the other has a lower one (e.g., one Tesla Model S at 48A, one Hyundai Kona at 32A), running them on independent circuits matched to each vehicle's optimal rate sometimes makes more sense than load sharing.

Households planning third EV addition or major load changes sometimes install two independent circuits up front, even if they could share — gives more future flexibility but costs more now.

Common questions.

Can I have one charger and just unplug/plug between two cars?

Yes, this works and it's the cheapest approach — $1,800-$3,200 for a single Level 2 install used by two vehicles. The constraint is human coordination: someone has to physically swap the plug between vehicles. Works well when one driver is consistently home earlier and can swap before the second driver needs the charger, or when one vehicle's daily mileage is low enough to skip charging some nights. Many two-EV households start here and upgrade to dual chargers when the manual swap gets old.

Does load sharing slow down my charging?

Only when both vehicles are plugged in simultaneously. When only one vehicle is plugged in, that vehicle gets the full circuit amperage. When both are plugged in, the chargers split available amperage — typically 24A each on a 48A circuit, which is 22 mph of range vs 44 mph at full rate. Still adds 180+ miles of range over a typical 8-hour overnight charge per vehicle — more than enough for nearly any Marin driver.

Will my existing panel support two EV circuits?

Run the load calc to find out. A 200A panel in a typical Marin home (no heat pump, no major future loads planned) can usually support two independent 40A EV circuits with appropriate load calc results. Yes, but it's slightly more cost-efficient to plan for two from the start if you know you'll have two EVs. Adding a second circuit later requires another permit, another install visit, and sometimes routing through different paths than the first circuit. Doing both at the same time (even if you only need one initially — the second circuit's conduit is run but not energized) costs incrementally less than two separate projects. How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?

Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.

How quickly can you schedule?

Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.

What warranty do you offer on work?
