A faint, constant 60Hz hum from an electrical panel is normal — it's the magnetostriction of breaker components vibrating at AC line frequency. A louder buzz, an intermittent buzz, a buzz that gets louder under load, or a buzz with crackling or popping sounds indicates a problem (loose connection, failing breaker, or busbar issue) and requires electrician attention.
01Normal vs concerning panel sounds.
Normal: faint constant hum at 60Hz that you can only hear with your ear next to the panel. Modern breakers and panel components have small ferromagnetic parts that vibrate slightly at AC line frequency — physics, not failure. Most homes have this sound but most homeowners never notice it.
Concerning: loud buzz audible from across the room, intermittent buzzing that comes and goes, buzz that gets louder when appliances start, or buzz accompanied by crackling, popping, or clicking sounds. These indicate specific failure modes that require diagnosis — loose breaker connections, failing breaker mechanisms, or busbar issues at the panel.
02Common causes of concerning buzzing.
Loose breaker-to-busbar connection
Most common cause. Breaker contacts to busbar loosen over time and arc internally, creating buzzing under load. Eventually fails completely. Solution: breaker replacement or re-torque of connection. Common in panels 20+ years old.
Failing breaker internal mechanism
Breakers wear out — internal contacts pit and arc, springs weaken. Failing breakers buzz, run warm, and eventually fail to trip or fail to carry rated current. Solution: breaker replacement (typically $180-$340 per breaker including labor).
Busbar or panel-side issue
Less common but more serious. Damaged busbars (often from a prior failure event) arc continuously and buzz. Requires panel inspection and possibly panel replacement. Often the trigger for full panel upgrade rather than spot repair.
03When to call for service.
Loud buzzing audible from across the room, intermittent buzzing, buzzing with crackling sounds, or buzzing accompanied by warm panel surface (carefully feel the panel cover — slightly warm is OK, hot is not) all warrant same-day electrician response. These can escalate to breaker failure or panel-level fire if untreated.
Faint constant 60Hz hum that requires putting your ear against the panel to hear isn't urgent — schedule next-available appointment if you want it inspected for reassurance. Most homes have this sound at low level. Diagnostic visits for panel noise typically involve thermal imaging and load testing, run $240-$420 for the visit.
Common questions.
Is a humming breaker about to fail?
Maybe, depending on how loud and how it correlates with load. A breaker that hums faintly when nothing's running is usually fine. A breaker that hums loudly only when heavy loads are active is showing signs of loose connection or wear and warrants replacement before it fails. A breaker that buzzes constantly with crackling sounds is actively failing and should be replaced same-day. Thermal imaging during diagnostic visit identifies which scenario you're in.
Can I just replace the buzzing breaker myself?
Not recommended. Replacing breakers in an energized panel is dangerous — the busbar is hot even with the main breaker off in some panel designs, and the work is governed by NEC 110.26 working clearance and PPE requirements. Beyond safety, identifying which breaker is actually the problem requires thermal imaging or systematic load testing — replacing the wrong breaker doesn't fix the issue. Electricians do this work routinely with proper safety procedures.
How urgent is a buzzing panel?
Depends on the sound character. Faint constant hum: not urgent, schedule whenever convenient. Loud buzz from across the room: same-day to next-business-day. Buzz with crackling or popping: same-day emergency. Buzz with warm panel surface: same-day emergency. Buzz with burning smell: immediate — shut off main breaker and call now. Use the urgency tier that matches what you're observing.
Does buzzing always mean panel replacement?
No — most buzzing panel issues are resolved with breaker replacement or connection retightening, not full panel replacement. Full replacement is appropriate when: panel is FPE or Zinsco (separate issue), multiple breakers are failing simultaneously (often age-related across the panel), busbar damage is identified, or panel is at capacity AND has buzzing AND is over 25 years old (multiple reasons converge). Most buzzing-panel diagnostic visits result in $200-$800 spot repair, not $5,000+ panel replacement.
How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.
