The biggest preventable source of buyer's-remorse on electrical projects is the product-selection step, not the install. A homeowner who picks the wrong EV charger pays $1,400-$3,200 to install it, then pays again 18 months later when they realize the 32A unit can't actually charge their vehicle overnight at full speed. The same homeowner picking the right product upfront avoids the second visit entirely.

The goal isn't to push specific brands — it's to give homeowners the criteria to make a buy-decision that holds up across multiple PSPS seasons, atmospheric-river events, and the normal cycle of home electrification.

In many electrical product categories, brand quality bifurcates between top-tier and everything else. Top-tier brands have 10+ year parts availability, dedicated technical support, and durability under Marin conditions. Lower-tier brands often look identical at purchase but lack support 3-5 years downstream.
PSPS exposure means generator and battery products see harder use than national averages. Coastal humidity affects outdoor electrical hardware. Seismic considerations affect panel mounting and conduit specifications. Buy decisions should account for these.

Tesla Wall Connector for Tesla-primary households (better integration); ChargePoint for universal use; Wallbox for design-conscious installs.
Generac for mid-tier home generator installs (best parts availability in Marin); Kohler for estate-class installs (longer warranty, quieter operation).

Some product categories have brands we actively avoid based on field experience. Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels we discussed in the safety guide. Beyond panels, we've stopped installing several lower-tier generator brands due to parts-availability issues 3-5 years after install (we won't name them publicly to avoid legal exposure, but we explain on the quote call which brands we'd skip).
For EV chargers, we avoid no-name imports and unbranded units sold on online marketplaces — UL listing is questionable, manufacturer support is non-existent, and parts replacement at the 5-year mark is often impossible. The savings of $200-$400 on the unit don't justify the replacement cost downstream.
Three criteria matter most when evaluating any electrical product spec sheet.
UL-listed products meet US safety standards. Look for UL 2231 (EV chargers), UL 1741 (inverters), UL 1449 (SPDs), UL 489 (circuit breakers). Products without UL listing should not be installed in residential applications.
Look for at least 5-year manufacturer warranty (10+ for major capital items like generators and panels), with US-based technical support and parts availability. Warranty length is the manufacturer's vote of confidence in their own product.
For major capital items (generators, panels, hardwired EV chargers), the question that matters most is whether replacement parts will be available a decade after install. Top-tier brands publish parts catalogs going back 20+ years; lower-tier brands may not support a model 5 years after launch.
For most products, we provide and install with full warranty coverage — both manufacturer warranty (on the product) and our labor warranty (on the install). For homeowners who prefer to provide their own equipment (often for EV chargers, sometimes for generators or specific lighting fixtures), we install supplied equipment with a slightly different warranty structure — our labor warranty applies to install workmanship, but the manufacturer warranty is the homeowner's responsibility to navigate if a product issue arises.
Either path works. The choice usually comes down to whether the homeowner has a strong product preference (Tesla Wall Connector, specific Lutron keypad finish, custom lighting fixture) versus wanting one accountable party for both product and install. We document the choice clearly on the estimate so warranty boundaries are explicit upfront.
