Panel burning smell = emergency.
Burning smell from the main panel is the most urgent electrical scenario short of visible fire. Heat damage at the panel can progress to full panel fire quickly.

TL;DR
Burning smell at the main electrical panel: emergency. Turn off the main breaker if accessible safely (top of panel, no smoke/sparks). Call electrician emergency dispatch. If smoke or visible damage: leave the area and call 911. Panel fires can start in minutes from advanced heat damage; this is the most urgent electrical scenario short of visible flame. Common causes: main breaker failure, busbar damage, loose neutral or ground at panel, water intrusion.
01Why panel smell is worse than outlet smell.
The panel is the central electrical infrastructure for the home. All current flows through it. A fault in the panel can: ignite the panel box itself (energized busbar arcing creates significant heat very quickly), cascade to multiple circuits simultaneously (broader damage), and feed continued energy into a growing fire from the utility supply (the main breaker, if it remains closed, keeps providing current to the fault).
Outlet faults typically remain localized — limited current path, limited fuel for fire spread. Panel faults can scale rapidly: full panel fires have started in homes where smell warning was ignored for hours. Marin fire department records include several incidents of significant home damage from panel fires that progressed from initial heat damage. Same-day response is the right urgency level if no other signs; immediate emergency if smell is strong, you see smoke, or you hear sounds from the panel.

02Immediate response sequence.
Assess approach safety
If you see smoke from the panel, hear loud crackling or buzzing, or feel heat from several feet away: don't approach. Leave the area, call 911, call PG&E (1-800-743-5000) to request emergency disconnect. If smell is faint and no other signs: cautious approach is okay.
Turn off main breaker if safely accessible
Main breaker is at the top of the panel, the largest breaker. Turn it OFF. This de-energizes the home (except for the line between meter and panel, which is utility-supplied and remains energized). Stops heat generation from any internal fault. Don't open the panel cover, don't touch components — just operate the main breaker.
Emergency electrician dispatch
Call electrician for emergency response — same-day even if after-hours. Provide details: smell strong/faint, smoke visible or not, any sounds from panel, time noticed. Emergency dispatch typically 1-3 hours from call across Marin even after-hours and weekends.
03Repair scope.
Minimum repair: panel inspection to identify the fault source, repair or replacement of damaged components (breaker, neutral bar, busbar section, etc.), restoration of safe operation. Diagnostic visit $250-$450 emergency rate. If repair is component-level: additional $300-$1,200 typical.
Larger scope often warranted: full panel replacement if internal damage is significant, especially for older panels (Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or 30+ year old generic panels). Panel replacement cost $3,500-$6,500 typical for 200A residential service in Marin. Often the right answer if heat damage occurred — patching damaged panels isn't reliable. Insurance frequently covers panel replacement when documented as electrical fault leading to damage.

Is it safe to be in the house with a burning smell at the panel?
For active fire risk: leave the area, call 911. For burning smell without visible signs: limit time in the area, turn off main breaker if accessible, leave while waiting for electrician. The fact that you don't see fire doesn't mean fire isn't developing. Better to be cautious — wait outside or in a different part of the home, well away from the panel.
How fast can panel fires develop?
Variable. Heat-damaged panels with no immediate ignition can sit at warning state for hours-days. Active arcing faults can ignite within minutes. The smell is a warning that the condition exists; you can't predict the timeline from smell alone. Same-day or emergency response is the right level — don't gamble that you have more time.
What about turning off main breaker — is it safe?
Operating the main breaker (toggling OFF) is generally safe when the panel is accessible and you don't see/hear/feel signs of active danger. If panel is hot, smoking, or making loud noises: don't approach to operate the breaker — leave and call 911 + PG&E. For typical 'I smell something' scenarios, the brief approach to flip the main breaker is reasonable.
Will I need a new panel?
Often yes. Heat damage to panel components usually warrants replacement rather than patch repair. Modern panels are safer than older ones (better breakers, arc-fault detection, surge protection). The investment in panel replacement ($3,500-$6,500) is reasonable insurance against repeat issues and ongoing fire risk from compromised panels. Sometimes a damaged single breaker can be replaced in an otherwise sound panel — assessment determines.
How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. California State License Board C-10 Electrical Contractor #989290, in good standing. Carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance as required by California law. Bondable on projects requiring it. Happy to provide proof of insurance to clients or property managers on request. License lookup: cslb.ca.gov.
