Breaker won't reset? Three things to check.

Breakers refuse to reset for three reasons: active fault on the circuit, mechanical failure of the breaker itself, or being in a middle (tripped) position that requires firm reset technique.

01The 'middle position' trap.

Tripped breakers usually sit in a middle position between OFF and ON — neither fully off nor on. Trying to reset by just pushing toward ON doesn't work because the internal mechanism is in the tripped state. You have to fully push OFF first, which resets the internal mechanism, then push firmly to ON. The technique: push and hold OFF for a moment (you'll feel a small click as mechanism resets), then push firmly to ON.

If you've been pushing toward ON without first going through OFF, the breaker may appear stuck. Try the OFF-then-ON technique. If it now resets and holds: you were dealing with technique issue, not real fault. 02Active fault vs mechanical failure.

Active fault — breaker is doing its job

You can reset firmly (OFF then ON), but it trips immediately or within seconds. Mechanism is fine; breaker is correctly detecting a fault. Action: leave breaker OFF, identify and address the fault (see breaker-trips-immediately cluster), then reset.

Mechanical failure — breaker is broken

Symptoms: breaker physically feels loose, sloppy in operation, won't move fully to ON position regardless of technique, or stays in mid-position without snapping to either state. Breaker has failed mechanically; replacement needed. Modest failure rate for breakers — most last 20+ years but some fail earlier, especially older Federal Pacific or Zinsco breakers.

Special case: AFCI or GFCI breaker

AFCI and GFCI breakers have test buttons and sometimes more complex reset behavior. If you have an AFCI or GFCI breaker that won't reset: press the TEST button first (which trips it), then reset. This is occasionally needed to reset AFCI/GFCI breakers properly.

03When and how to act.

For mechanical failure: breaker replacement straightforward. Cost: $150-$300 typical for residential breaker replacement (breaker itself $20-$100 depending on type, labor and minor parts the rest). Most installs same-visit if breaker brand/model is in stock. AFCI/GFCI breakers cost more ($80-$200 for breaker itself) but same install scope.

For active fault: address the fault first (see related clusters), then reset breaker. If fault is severe enough to cause repeated immediate trips, panel inspection during diagnostic visit can identify whether breaker has been damaged by the fault. Sometimes breaker replacement is needed even after the underlying fault is addressed — repeated fault events stress the breaker mechanism.

Common questions.

Can I just replace the breaker myself?

Strongly not recommended. Replacing breakers involves working in the live main panel (the bus bars remain energized even with main breaker off — they're hot from utility supply). Risk of severe shock or electrocution. Modest savings ($100-$200) doesn't justify the risk. Electrician work covered by license, insurance, and safety procedures.

What if I have an obsolete panel and breakers aren't available?

Older panels (Federal Pacific, Zinsco, some Bulldog and Pushmatic models) have limited or no breaker availability. Sometimes 'reproduction' or used breakers exist but reliability is poor. For these panels, breaker failure often triggers panel upgrade conversation — replace the panel with modern equipment and current-production breakers. Cost $3,500-$6,500 typical.

Could this be a sign my panel needs replacement?

Single breaker failure: usually no — just replace the breaker. Multiple breaker failures over a short period: yes, often indicates aging panel where multiple components are reaching end of life. Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or generic 40+ year old panels with multiple failures: panel upgrade recommended for safety.

How urgent is a non-resettable breaker?

Depends on what's on the circuit. Circuit serving refrigerator or other critical load: same-day. Circuit serving optional or secondary loads: next business day acceptable. Mechanical failure isn't usually immediate fire risk (broken breakers don't typically start fires) but does leave you without power on that circuit until repair.

How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?

Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.

How quickly can you schedule?

Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical.
