Trips on reset = active fault.
A breaker that trips the moment you reset it has detected an active fault. Resetting again won't fix it — call electrician for diagnosis.

TL;DR
Breaker trips instantly when reset: there's a short circuit or hard ground fault on the circuit. Continuing to reset risks damaging the breaker further or igniting the fault location. Turn the breaker OFF and leave it. Unplug everything on that circuit (in case the fault is an appliance). Call electrician same-day. Most common causes: damaged appliance/cord, water-damaged outlet or junction box, damaged wiring (often rodent or construction damage), failed component in fixture.
01What 'instant trip' tells the diagnostic.
Breakers trip in two main modes: thermal trip (overload — running too much current for too long, heat builds up in the breaker, trips after seconds-minutes) and magnetic trip (short circuit — extremely high current detected by magnetic sensing element, trips within milliseconds). When you reset and it trips instantly, that's magnetic trip — short circuit. Current is finding a direct path from hot to neutral or hot to ground, drawing massive current that the breaker recognizes as a fault.
Where the short can be: anywhere on the circuit between the panel and any outlet, switch, or fixture on that circuit. Common locations: damaged appliance cord (cord with internal short), damaged outlet (water-damaged, scorched, or mechanically damaged), damaged wire inside wall (rodent damage, construction damage, age-related), failed component in a hardwired fixture, water-damaged junction box in attic or crawlspace. Diagnostic involves systematically isolating the circuit segments until the fault location is found.

02Diagnostic steps electrician will follow.
Unplug everything on circuit
First step: unplug all appliances and devices on the circuit. Reset breaker. If it holds: the fault is in an appliance — plug appliances back one at a time to identify. If it still trips instantly: the fault is in the wiring or a hardwired component, deeper diagnostic needed.
Isolate circuit segments
Open outlets and junction boxes along the circuit, disconnect wiring at each point progressively from the panel outward. At each step, reset breaker. The first segment where breaker holds is upstream of the fault; the segment where it trips contains the fault.
Identify and repair
Once fault location is identified: visible damage typically (scorched outlet, damaged wire, water-affected component). Repair the damaged section, replace damaged components, restore the circuit. Verify breaker holds with all components connected.
03What you can check before calling.
Useful prep: unplug everything visible on the affected circuit (anything that was plugged in when the trip occurred). Note what was plugged in — could be diagnostic clue. Check for any recent events that might cause damage: water leak nearby, recent construction or remodeling, pet/rodent activity in the area. This information saves diagnostic time when electrician arrives.
Don't do: don't keep resetting the breaker (each reset attempts to energize a faulted circuit, can damage breaker contacts and potentially worsen the fault). Don't open outlets or wiring yourself (the circuit needs proper diagnostic, not amateur disassembly). Don't try to replace the breaker thinking the breaker is faulty (breakers are doing their job — protecting against the actual fault). Cost expectation: $200-$400 diagnostic + $150-$600 repair for typical fault.

Sometimes, but usually no. Breakers that fail typically fail in 'won't trip when they should' mode (worn contacts can't open quickly enough) or 'mechanically broken' mode (won't reset at all). 'Trips when it shouldn't' is rare. The most likely scenario is the breaker is correctly detecting a real fault. Diagnostic includes verifying breaker function but starts with the assumption that the trip is legitimate.
Is it safe to leave the breaker off until repair?
Yes — leaving the circuit de-energized is the correct interim state. Other circuits in the home continue working. Inconvenience proportional to what was on the affected circuit. Call electrician for same-day to next-day repair to minimize duration. Don't try to bypass the breaker or use power tools to override it — that creates fire risk.
What if my whole house keeps tripping (main breaker)?
Main breaker tripping is a different scenario — covered in main-breaker-tripped cluster. Symptoms similar but cause and response different. Main breaker instant-trip means major fault somewhere in panel or service entrance — emergency dispatch appropriate.
Can pets or water cause this?
Yes to both. Pet chewing damage to cords or in-wall wiring (rodents in walls, dogs chewing accessible cords) creates shorts. Water damage to outlets (especially outdoor outlets, bathroom outlets near showers, kitchen outlets near sinks, basement outlets in damp conditions) creates shorts when water bridges hot and neutral. Diagnostic identifies; repair addresses both the immediate fault and contributing conditions (pest control, moisture control).
How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. California State License Board C-10 Electrical Contractor #989290, in good standing. Carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance as required by California law. Bondable on projects requiring it. Happy to provide proof of insurance to clients or property managers on request. License lookup: cslb.ca.gov.
