02What to look for beyond brand.

UL listing is non-negotiable — every charger we install must carry UL 2594 or UL 2231-2 certification for EVSE. Most reputable brands have this; many cheap Amazon imports don't. UL-listed units have undergone safety testing for the failure modes that matter (overheating, ground fault detection, surge response).

Amperage capability should match your install plan: 40A is the safe default for most installs; 48A is the maximum residential rating per NEC and useful if your panel can support it; lower (24A or 32A) is acceptable for tight panel-capacity situations. Look for hardwired-capable units if you're doing a permanent install; plug-in NEMA 14-50 units work if you want portability or are leasing.

App quality varies widely. Tesla's app is integrated with vehicle data and is the cleanest experience for Tesla owners. Wallbox and ChargePoint both have polished apps. Emporia and Grizzl-E apps are functional but more basic. Decide whether scheduling, energy monitoring, and remote control matter to you — they're useful features but not strictly necessary.

Older Gen 1/Gen 2 Tesla Wall Connectors (used market)

Earlier Tesla Wall Connector generations are still around on Craigslist and FB Marketplace. The Gen 3 hardware is meaningfully better — Wi-Fi for monitoring/updates, better thermal management, load sharing. Don't save $200 buying a used Gen 2 unit when Gen 3 is $475 new.

First-generation units from now-defunct brands

Several EV charger brands from 2018-2021 have exited the market. Their units may still work but warranty support and firmware updates are gone. Stick with brands actively shipping current products.

Common questions.

Does the brand of charger affect charging speed?

Mostly no, with minor variations. The charging speed is determined by: your vehicle's onboard charger maximum rate, the circuit amperage (40A vs 48A), and the charger's amperage capability. A 48A Tesla Wall Connector and a 48A Wallbox Pulsar Plus deliver the same speed to the same vehicle. Brand-specific features (app, load management, multi-unit sharing) differ but raw charging speed is consistent across reputable 48A units.

Should I get a higher-amperage charger than I need now?

Generally yes if budget allows. A 48A charger costs $100-$200 more than a 40A version but supports faster charging if you upgrade vehicles later or if your panel can support more amperage. Downgrading from a 48A charger to a 32A circuit is easy (configure in app); upgrading from a 32A charger to a 48A circuit requires replacing the hardware.
