Does the brand of charger affect charging speed?
Mostly no, with minor variations. The charging speed is determined by: your vehicle's onboard charger maximum rate, the circuit amperage (40A vs 48A), and the charger's amperage capability. A 48A Tesla Wall Connector and a 48A Wallbox Pulsar Plus deliver the same speed to the same vehicle. Brand-specific features (app, load management, multi-unit sharing) differ but raw charging speed is consistent across reputable 48A units.
Should I get a higher-amperage charger than I need now?
Generally yes if budget allows. A 48A charger costs $100-$200 more than a 40A version but supports faster charging if you upgrade vehicles later or if your panel can support more amperage. Downgrading from a 48A charger to a 32A circuit is easy (configure in app); upgrading from a 32A charger to a 48A circuit requires replacing the hardware. For new installs, 48A capable hardware is the typical recommendation.
Do I need an app-connected charger or is a basic one fine?
Depends on whether you'll actually use the app features. Useful features: charging schedule (charge during off-peak rates), energy monitoring (track cost), notifications (charging complete, error states), and load management (throttle for panel capacity). If you don't care about these, a basic charger like Grizzl-E ($350) works fine. If you do, the $100-$300 premium for Wallbox or ChargePoint pays for itself in ongoing convenience.
Will any of these chargers work with the upcoming Plug-In Hybrid models?
Yes — Level 2 J1772 (and NACS adapters) work with any EV or plug-in hybrid sold in North America. Plug-in hybrids typically have lower onboard chargers (3.6-6.6 kW) than full EVs, so they won't pull the full 48A even if your charger can deliver it. Doesn't matter — the charger negotiates with the vehicle for the appropriate rate. Future-proofing for upcoming PHEV models is essentially automatic.
How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.
