Can I upgrade from manual to automatic later?
Yes — adding ATS later is possible but typically involves replacing the manual transfer switch with ATS hardware. Cost is similar to installing ATS originally ($1,200-$2,800 hardware + $800-$1,800 labor). Adding a standby generator at the same time costs more than just the ATS upgrade. If your long-term plan is standby generator with ATS, installing ATS from the start avoids future upgrade cost.
How fast does ATS switch over?
Typical ATS transfer time: 10-30 seconds total from grid failure to generator power restored. Breakdown: ATS detects grid failure (1-2 seconds), signals generator to start (1-2 seconds), generator starts and stabilizes (8-15 seconds), ATS transfers load (1-2 seconds). For homes with critical loads requiring uninterrupted power (medical devices, computers, security systems), UPS batteries bridge the 10-30 second gap.
Does ATS work with solar+battery?
Yes — ATS coexists with solar+battery systems, though the integration requires care. Modern solar+battery systems (Tesla Powerwall + Gateway) have built-in transfer switching for the battery system. Adding standby generator with separate ATS coordinates with the battery via priority logic: battery handles short outages, generator activates for extended outages or when battery depletes. Best designed during initial planning, not added piecemeal.
Will an ATS prevent generator back-feed to grid?
Yes — preventing back-feed is the ATS's safety-critical function. The mechanical switch physically interrupts the connection between generator and grid; even if generator runs while grid is up, the ATS won't connect them simultaneously. Back-feed to grid is dangerous (can electrocute utility workers restoring lines) and illegal in California. Properly installed ATS makes back-feed mechanically impossible.
How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. California State License Board C-10 Electrical Contractor #989290, in good standing. Carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance as required by California law.
