01What you might hear and what it means.
Normal electrical sounds: a faint 60 Hz hum from transformers (doorbell transformers, low-voltage lighting transformers, some fluorescent ballasts) is normal. Faint relay clicks when smart switches or motion sensors activate. Faint mechanical sounds from older fluorescent ballasts. These are typically barely audible and steady-state.
Abnormal: loud buzzing from outlets, switches, or panel components; sharp crackling or popping; sizzling sound (like water hitting hot pan); intermittent loud humming that comes and goes with appliance use. These signal abnormal conditions — usually arcing at damaged contacts or loose connections. The sound is the arc itself (electrical discharge through air gap) or the rapid expansion/contraction of components due to heat cycling.

02Location-specific considerations.
Outlets
Loud buzz when something plugged in, crackling when load is on, popping during use: outlet has damaged contacts or loose internal connections. Same response as visible spark or burning smell — turn off circuit, call electrician. Repair typically outlet replacement and inspection of wiring in box: $150-$350.
Switches
Buzzing or crackling when operated: switch contacts are damaged or loose. Some dimmer switches make faint buzzing as part of normal operation (electronic switching at dim levels), especially with LED bulbs — investigate if loud or new. Repair: switch replacement, sometimes paired with LED-compatible dimmer if dimming is involved. $80-$250.
Panel
Loud humming or buzzing from the panel: serious — main breaker or busbar issue likely. Crackling from panel: very serious, arcing inside panel. Don't approach if loud — leave area, emergency response. Same-day even if subtle. Panel buzzing can be precursor to panel fire.
03Diagnostic and repair.
For non-emergency arcing sounds (subtle, intermittent, no other warning signs): same-day diagnostic appropriate. Electrician locates the source (which component is making the sound), inspects for damage, identifies root cause (loose connections, worn contacts, etc.). Repair varies with location and scope.
For emergency sounds (loud, persistent, accompanied by other warnings like smell or visible damage): emergency response, same-day even after-hours. Risk of escalation to fire is real with active arcing. Panels especially — loud panel buzzing has preceded panel fires in Marin homes. Don't delay.

Doorbell transformers and other small low-voltage transformers do produce faint hum. Loud hum from a doorbell transformer: it's failing — replace it. Cost $80-$150 for transformer replacement. Not urgent (low voltage, limited fire risk) but worth addressing.
My fluorescent ballast hums — is that normal?
Old magnetic ballasts hum audibly as normal operation. Modern electronic ballasts (and LED retrofits) should be silent. If your fluorescent fixture has new loud hum that wasn't there before: ballast failing, replace ballast or convert to LED. Cost $80-$200.
What about humming when I turn on my AC or heater?
Some humming when large motor loads start (HVAC compressor) is normal — momentary inrush. Persistent humming during operation: could be load on undersized circuit (wire warming under load can vibrate slightly and hum), failing motor in the appliance, or loose connection somewhere in the supply circuit. Diagnostic visit can identify.
Is this an AFCI-detectable scenario?
AFCI breakers are designed to detect arc fault current patterns. They sometimes trip when arcing occurs on protected circuits, which is the desired behavior. If your AFCI is tripping AND you're hearing arcing sounds: the AFCI is doing its job; address the root cause (don't just keep resetting). Upgrading older non-AFCI breakers to AFCI products provides this protection going forward.
