How can I tell if I have aluminum branch wiring?
Open the panel cover and look at the bare wire ends at the breakers. Aluminum is silver-colored; copper is reddish-orange. Also: open one or two outlets and look at the wire ends — same color test applies. Homes built 1965-1972 are the highest-risk era; homes built 1968-1971 had the highest aluminum usage. Service-entrance wiring (the heavy wires from meter to main breaker) is often aluminum even in newer homes — that's normal and doesn't need remediation. The concern is small-gauge aluminum on branch circuits.
Why is AlumiConn acceptable when 'full replacement' sounds safer?
AlumiConn and COPALUM connectors are mechanical devices that solve the specific failure mode (loose connections at terminals) by creating a connection that doesn't loosen. The aluminum wire itself isn't the safety problem — the connections are. Replacing the connections eliminates the actual hazard. CPSC and major insurance carriers accept this as full remediation because it does, in fact, address the documented failure mode. Full replacement is more thorough but addresses a problem the connectors have already solved.
Is aluminum wiring affecting my home insurance?
Yes for most carriers. Many California homeowner policies either won't write new coverage on homes with un-remediated aluminum branch wiring, will surcharge significantly, or will require remediation as a condition of continued coverage. Existing policies grandfathered before stricter underwriting may not be affected — but on renewal or at sale, the issue surfaces. We coordinate with insurance carriers on remediation documentation so the work counts toward coverage requirements.
Can I retrofit just the failing connections rather than all of them?
We don't recommend it. The problem with aluminum connections is statistical — any specific connection may or may not fail this year, but the population of connections will produce failures over time. Retrofitting selectively means you're still rolling the dice on the un-retrofit connections. The cost difference between retrofitting 30 problem connections and retrofitting all 90 connections is small (most of the cost is mobilization and box access, not the connectors themselves). Full retrofit is the standard scope.
How long does aluminum remediation take?
AlumiConn retrofit: 2-4 days for typical Marin home, depending on accessibility and number of boxes. Day 1 is panel and main runs; days 2-4 are room-by-room outlet/switch work. House is mostly habitable during the work — power is off only in the rooms being actively worked on. Full copper replacement: 1-3 weeks depending on home size and wall access, with longer power-off periods. Both end with AHJ inspection.
How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
Our standard residential warranty: 2 years on labor, manufacturer warranty on parts (varies by product — typically 1-10 years). Major installs (panels, generators, EV chargers) often have longer manufacturer warranties (5-10 years). If there's an issue with our work in the warranty period, we come back and fix it at no cost. We also stand behind work past warranty — repeat customers and referrals matter more than a transactional fix.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. California State License Board C-10 Electrical Contractor #989290, in good standing. Carry general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance as required by California law.
