01How AFCIs work and why they trip.
AFCI breakers monitor the electrical signature on a circuit and detect specific patterns that indicate arcing — the irregular current bursts that occur when a wire connection is failing or when insulation is breaking down. When detected, the breaker trips to prevent the arc from escalating to a fire. AFCIs are required by NEC in most residential living areas because arc-faults in walls have been the cause of significant residential fires.
The challenge: some normal electrical loads have characteristics that look like arcing to the AFCI detector. Motor starts (vacuum cleaners, drills, sewing machines), some dimmers, certain LED bulbs with poor power-supply design, and high-end audio equipment with significant inrush current can all 'fool' AFCIs into nuisance tripping. Newer AFCI breakers (2014+ designs) have better filtering and nuisance-trip less than older ones, but the issue isn't fully solved.

Real arc-fault trip indicators
Trips occur randomly without correlation to specific devices, trip happens when nothing is in use, trip is accompanied by burning smell or warm fixture, trip pattern increases over time. These are the failure modes AFCIs are catching properly.
Nuisance trip indicators
Trips correlate with specific device starts (always when vacuum runs, always when dimmer is adjusted), pattern is consistent and predictable, no other electrical symptoms, device that causes trip is older or has known motor wear. Worth investigating before assuming AFCI failure.
Diagnostic AFCI vs replacement
Sometimes the AFCI breaker itself has failed (older designs more prone). Sometimes the breaker is doing its job catching a real arc. Sometimes a known-good replacement AFCI trips on the same device — that's the device causing nuisance trips.
03What to do depending on diagnosis.
Real arc-fault catches require finding the arcing source — usually a loose connection somewhere in the circuit. Diagnostic involves identifying which circuit is involved (the tripping breaker shows you), then systematically inspecting outlets, switches, junctions, and fixtures on that circuit for evidence of loose terminals, damaged insulation, or failing devices. Once the arc source is fixed, the AFCI stops tripping.
Nuisance trips have fewer good solutions. Options: replace the older AFCI breaker with a newer design (less prone to nuisance tripping on motor starts), replace the problem device with a different one, dedicate the problem device to a non-AFCI circuit where allowed by code (limited situations), or accept the nuisance and reset the breaker as needed. Generally no — modern code (2014 NEC and later) requires AFCI protection on most residential circuits. Replacing an AFCI with a non-AFCI breaker creates a code violation and removes protection that prevents arc-fault fires. Some jurisdictions allow conversion to GFCI dual-function or to specific exception scenarios, but blanket replacement to standard breakers isn't compliant. We won't do this work.
Why didn't my house need AFCI before?
AFCI requirements expanded over multiple NEC cycles starting in 1999. Initially required only in bedrooms, expanded to most living areas by 2014, and current requirements cover virtually all residential branch circuits. Older homes built before requirements were added were 'grandfathered' — no requirement to retrofit unless the panel or wiring is upgraded. New work and panel upgrades trigger current AFCI requirements; that's why your recent panel upgrade has AFCI breakers that the old panel didn't.
Are some AFCI brands better than others?
Yes — newer AFCI designs from major manufacturers (Square D Homeline, Eaton CH/BR, Siemens) have improved filtering and lower nuisance-trip rates than older designs. Combination AFCI/GFCI dual-function breakers from these manufacturers are current generation. If your panel has older AFCI breakers (10+ years), replacement with newer designs often resolves nuisance tripping. Cost is moderate ($180-$340 per breaker installed).
Could it be a real arc-fault in the wall?
Yes — that's why AFCIs exist. Arc-faults from loose wire-to-device connections, damaged insulation, or nail strikes from prior renovation are real failure modes that historically caused house fires. AFCIs catch these before fire. If your AFCI trips randomly (not correlated to specific devices) and the pattern is increasing over time, the AFCI is likely catching real arcing that needs to be found and fixed.
