Done badly, it's spotlights pointed obviously at things. The technical execution determines whether it reads as architectural or as added-on.

01The main techniques explained.
Wall grazing
Fixture mounted close to the wall (4-12 inches out), aimed downward parallel to the wall surface. Reveals texture in stucco, stone, plaster, or natural materials. The grazing angle creates dramatic shadowing — flat walls feel three-dimensional.
Wall washing
Fixture mounted further from wall (18-30 inches out), aimed at a steeper angle. Creates smooth, even wall illumination. Works on smooth walls (drywall, painted plaster). Calm rather than dramatic.
Art lighting
Focused beam on specific artwork. Ceiling-mounted track or recessed adjustable, or picture lights mounted near the artwork. Critical: appropriate beam angle for the piece size, distance from wall sized to avoid frame shadow, color temperature appropriate for the medium.
Cove lighting
LED strip or linear fixture concealed in a cove or soffit, casting indirect light onto ceiling or wall. Creates ambient glow without visible source. Common in modern Marin homes with stepped soffits or coffered ceilings.
02What good install requires.
Accent lighting goes wrong in three predictable ways. First: fixture visibility. Bad accent lighting puts the source where you can see it — fixture lens in line of sight from common seating positions. Good accent lighting buries the source (recessed adjustable downlight aimed precisely, hidden cove, integrated linear). The viewer sees the lit object, not the fixture that's lighting it.
Second: dimming and color tuning. Accent lighting at the wrong intensity (too bright) feels like spotlight rather than highlight. Wrong color temperature kills the effect — 5000K art lighting makes warm-toned paintings look wrong. Quality install includes appropriate dimming (each accent zone separately controllable) and CCT matched to the medium (typically 3000K for most residential art and architecture; 2700K for warm-toned art). Third: install precision. Wall-graze fixtures placed 18" from wall instead of 8" miss the effect entirely. Art lighting beam at 30° when 15° was needed flood-lights instead of accents. The install precision matters more than the fixture brand.

For single-wall or small-scope accent work, no — electrician + interior designer typically handles design adequately. For larger scope (multiple zones, complex architecture, significant art collection), dedicated lighting designer adds meaningful value. Designer expertise shows in fixture spec (specific beam angles, CCT, dimming type) and placement precision that's hard to fully think through without lighting design training.
How much does art lighting cost?

Will accent lighting damage my art?
Quality LED accent lighting causes minimal damage to art. Modern LED fixtures emit essentially no UV (the wavelength that fades art) and minimal IR (the heat that affects materials). For serious collections, museum-grade fixtures with UV/IR filtering provide additional protection at higher cost. How do you handle pricing — flat fee or hourly?
Both, depending on scope. Routine service calls and predictable scope (panel replacement, EV charger install, transfer switch install, fixture replacement) are flat-fee quoted up front. Diagnostic visits and emergency scope are hourly because we don't know what we'll find. Either way, you get a written quote before work starts on anything significant, and we don't proceed beyond the quote without your sign-off.
How quickly can you schedule?
Depends on scope and season. Emergency dispatch: same-day across Marin County (1-3 hours business hours, 1-4 hours after-hours). Same-day standard service: 3-6 hours from call when capacity allows; otherwise next business day. Scheduled service work: 1-3 weeks typical. Larger projects requiring permits and PG&E coordination: 4-12 weeks depending on scope. We're upfront about timeline at the quote stage.
What warranty do you offer on work?
